DAYTON — Police arrested a man early Thursday morning, July 3, who allegedly punched and threatened an officer with a knife.

Officer Donne Smith responded to a house in the 1600 block of Selkirk Drive at 12:40 a.m. and found Billy Conley, 37, in the kitchen. The kitchen was covered with blood, according to a police report. Smith noticed a knife next to Conley and told the man to calm down.

Conley then started cursing at the officer.

Smith then used a Taser on Conley, but the man snapped one of the Taser's wires, rendering the device useless, the report said.

Conley then picked the knife up and started threatening Smith, the report said.

Smith drew his weapon after Conley refused to put the knife down, as other officers arrived on the scene. Conley noticed the other officers and put the knife down. As officers tried to arrest Conley, he punched Smith in the face before being wrestled to the ground, the report said.

According to police, a woman at the house said Conley stabbed himself because he was upset they had run out of alcohol.

Conley was taken to Miami Valley Hospital to be treated for a minor cut to his stomach, the report said. He was then taken to jail on a felony charge of assaulting a police officer and a misdemeanor charge of resisting arrest.

Smith was not seriously hurt.

Police said Conley has a history of cutting himself for attention, the report said. He also faces a misdemeanor charge of resisting arrest.
