DAYTON — Alexa Lopez said she became "obsessed" with the Beatles when she was a freshman in high school.

On Tuesday, July 8, the 20-year-old Kettering resident was looking forward to attending the sold out Ringo Starr & his All-Starr Band concert at the Fraze Pavilion.

Starr, 68, is "the best drummer out there," Lopez said. "I think it's awesome he came out to Dayton a day after his birthday."

Lopez owns every Beatles album, including some 45s, and finds that contemporary music just can't live up to the "real sound" of the '60s.

Jason Wood of CD Connection said he's seen many young people purchasing music by The Doors, Led Zeppelin, Lynyrd Skynyrd and the Rolling Stones because "most of the music today is one-hit wonders and all sounds the same."

Movies have also reflected this backward shift in time, such as the 2007 release of "Across the Universe," which features Beatles music as the soundtrack for the Vietnam-era story line. Also, several trendy clothing stores including Delia's sell Beatles, Bob Marley and Rolling Stones T-shirts.

Still, other young adults are taking a scholarly approach: Sinclair Community College offers a history of rock music class. Lopez said she took a senior-level course at Indiana University focusing on the music of the Beatles.

If you missed Starr, you'll have other opportunities this summer at the Fraze to see older acts, including Crosby, Stills & Nash, Boston, Rick Springfield and the Backstreet Boys.
