McCain to address NAACP convention in Cincinnati today

One poll shows that the Republican has only 1 percent support among likely black voters.

COLUMBUS — Republican John McCain will have a tough act to follow when he speaks in Cincinnati at the 99th annual convention of the NAACP.

His appearance today, July 16, follows by two days Democrat Barack Obama's historic address as members of the nation's oldest civil rights organization thunderously cheered on Obama's quest to become the nation's first black president.

A national Quinnipiac University poll, released on Tuesday, July 15, indicated that McCain has his work cut out for him.

Obama led McCain 50 to 41 percent overall among likely voters, but among black voters McCain had just 1 percent support, compared to 94 percent for Obama. A Quinnipiac University poll released June 18 showed that in Ohio Obama led McCain 90-6 percent among black voters.

The McCain campaign was undaunted.

"John McCain will ultimately be president of the United States and that's why he will continue to reach out to audiences that may not include many Republican votes," Paul Lindsay, McCain's Ohio spokesman, said in a prepared statement.

"The NAACP is an important group that provides John McCain the opportunity to discuss his vision of creating jobs and bringing prosperity to communities across the United States."

It's also a group that Republicans frequently have ignored, said Jason A. Johnson, a political scientist at Ohio's Hiram College, who's attending the convention.

"They have a very long and sad history ... of skipping out on the NAACP convention," Johnson said.

President Bush attended as a candidate for president in 2000 but didn't return until 2006, Johnson said. McCain was among the Republican presidential candidates who skipped last year's convention, Johnson said.

Christopher Duncan, chairman of the political science department at the University of Dayton, said that McCain won't "bump up his black (voter) numbers" by attending but that's not the point.

"If you're John McCain, what you want to demonstrate is respect for people who might disagree with you," Duncan said. "Frankly, John McCain doesn't want to show any lack of courage."

State Rep. Tyrone Yates, D-Cincinnati, an Obama supporter and chairman of the host committee for the convention, said people are excited about McCain's appearance.

"The NAACP respects and honors Sen. ... John McCain for coming," Yates said. McCain will "get a warm and enthusiastic reception," he said.
