As folks throughout the Miami Valley get together on Tuesday, Aug. 5, to observe the 25th annual National Night Out — when communities and law enforcement unite to recognize crime-fighting efforts — they'll be joining an estimated 35 million participants in more than 10,000 communities nationwide focused on similar goals.

"We get the communities to go out and get to know each other," said Maj. Mark Ecton, organizer of the Dayton police caravan.

Many communities also celebrate by encouraging residents to turn on their porch lights.

The caravan of Dayton police, Mayor Rhine McLin, and the staffs of the Dayton City Commission and city government offices will visit neighborhoods, reaching out to residents at community-planned block parties.

Centerville will be holding its 17th National Night Out, featuring a "Mystery Night" theme where citizens will be sent throughout the community to find clues for prizes that come from solving a puzzle.

Following the game, participants can attend a concert at Stubbs Park Amphitheater.

"Every year we have a chance to get a single-line message out," said Officer Matt Dunn, coordinator for the Centerville Night Out. "This year it's the pedestrian safety message."

Centerville's slogan for 2008 — "Can you see me now?" — is intended to warn bicyclists and pedestrians about the importance of being visible to vehicles.

In Miami Twp., safety officials will visit neighborhood block parties and spread crime and drug prevention awareness.

The township has participated in the event for 14 years. The National Association of Town Watch has recognized the township as a national award winner for the past six years.
