ENGLEWOOD — Englewood Mayor Michael "Doc" Bowers died Monday, Aug. 4, at Sunrise Assisted Living in Englewood.
Dr. Bowers, 60, an Englewood optometrist who had been battling brain cancer since late last year, died peacefully around noon Monday surrounded by family and friends, his daughter Stephanie Bowers said.
Dr. Bowers had already served 18 years as a city council member when he was appointed in 1998 to finish the term of then-mayor Ed Kemper, who left to pursue another opportunity.
He was elected mayor in 1999 and has been continuously re-elected ever since. His current term expires in 2011.
Kindred Funeral Home is handling the arrangements, which are pending.
