Man who sparked wild chase faces numerous felony charges

DAYTON — Sixteen felony charges have been approved against the man who shot at police before leading them on a high-speed chase through western Montgomery County in June.

Rayshaun D. Hudson, 31, of 215 W. Nottingham Road, is expected to arraigned in court Thursday, Aug. 21, on most of those charges, which include six counts for failure to comply with an officer's order, four counts of assault on a police officer, robbery, tampering with evidence, vandalism and discharge of a firearm.

Hudson allegedly started a day-long crime spree Monday, June 2, by shooting at or near Montgomery County Sheriff's deputies responding to a call of a kidnapping near Shoup Mill Road and North Main Street at 3 a.m.

Hudson and a friend, Shelly Bailey, then allegedly robbed a feed store in New Lebanon around 10 a.m. Hudson then sparked an all-out manhunt when he allegedly shot at a New Lebanon detective who spotted his Ford Explorer.

Sheriff's Maj. John Brands picked up Hudson driving the Explorer near West Third Street and Gettysburg Avenue shortly after noon. When Hudson spotted the Brands' unmarked car, he allegedly turned around and fired at Brands' vehicle as he drove by.

Dayton, Trotwood and New Lebanon police got involved in the chase, during which a Trotwood officer flipped his cruiser trying to the cross the median on U.S. 35.

Hudson allegedly carjacked a Jeep Cherokee after his Explorer became inoperable during the chase.

The hour-long chase ended when Brands' unmarked cruiser collided with the stolen Cherokee after it came barreling onto Burleigh Avenue and crashed into the front porch of a house.

Hudson was arrested without suffering serious injury. Brands also suffered no significant injuries.

The Trotwood officer who flipped his vehicle was treated at the hospital and released the next day.

Six law-enforcement vehicles were rendered inoperable during the chase.

Bailey faces a third-degree felony charge stemming from the feed-store robbery and remains in the county jail.

Hudson has been arrested at least 12 times by Dayton police since 1998 for suspected crimes ranging from robbery to drug possession.

In September, Hudson, using the name Markel Gordon, allegedly shot a man twice in the leg and hit him with the gun in the 1800 block of East Main Street in Springfield. Police found Hudson pointing the gun at the man, according to court records.

Hudson fled and police pursued him. He was later seen on foot and allegedly tossed a bag containing cocaine before being arrested, court records show.

In May 2006 he was placed on the Miami Valley Crime Stoppers Most Wanted list for aggravated robbery.
