State official ends 'sleepover' practice for voting machines

COLUMBUS — Secretary of State Jennifer Brunner issued a directive Tuesday, Aug. 19, that will end the practice of allowing poll workers to take voting machines home overnight in the days leading to Election Day.

That's right: poll workers in 20 counties had been taking voting machines home — a practice quaintly referred to as "sleepovers."

Brunner said it just didn't fit with the goal of promoting confidence on Nov. 4.

The secretary offered federal funds to help county elections boards pay for storing and transporting the machines.

Brunner's office budgeted $100,000 for the effort.
