Airline eyes Springfield as new home

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio — City officials have had "preliminary" discussions with managers of Skybus Airlines, the recently-closed Columbus based airline, about relaunching operations at the Springfield airport, city Economic Development Administrator Tom Franzen said today, Aug. 29.
Skybus Airlines, the Columbus-based discount travel company that closed operations in April due to rising fuel costs and the lagging economy, is considering Springfield-Beckley Municipal Airport as a possible location to begin operations again.
"We are truly at the begin stages of just providing information," he said.
Skybus officials have been in contact with the city but the discussion is still in very early stages, said Franzen.
"There's a whole lot of work and study and analysis that needs to happen," he said.
While having a commercial airline in town would have benefits, it's still too early to discuss those potential boons, said Franzen.
"It's obvious there would be a benefit but we just kind of see that as putting the cart way before the horse at this time," he said.
