ST. PAUL, Minn. — During her much-hyped debut before the Republican National Convention, Republican vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin moved the crowd to boos three times – but that was only when she was bashing Democrats.

Those three times were rare exceptions. The crowd, comprised of GOP die-hards, made it clear they would rally behind an Alaska governor who has faced a week full of headlines about her personal life and her career as governor.

"She went beyond expectations," said Josh Hahn, an alternate delegate from Urbana.

The crowd greeted Palin with sustained applause, then kept it up with repeated standing ovations and chants of "Sarah! Sarah!"

And Palin made it clear she was willing to feed the crowd a little red meat – much to Ohio delegates' delight.

"She brought the dessert out," said alternate delegate Craig Bonar of Cortland. "And she used the sharp knife."

Delegates were united in assessing the one-time small-town Alaska mayor as no one to mess with.

"She's tough," said Scott Corbitt, an alternate delegate from Galloway, "just like a good mother should be."

U.S. Rep. Mike Turner, R-Centerville, said Palin "made the case" about her experience and the importance of the issues facing the country.

"People were ecstatic," he said. "It was just electric in the room."

U.S. Rep. Jean Schmidt, R-Loveland, called the vice presidential nominee "terrific."

"She is right on," she said. "She's absolutely tough enough for the job, savvy enough for the job and the right person at the right time for the job."

Ohioans were particularly pleased when Palin gave a shout out to retired Air Force Lt. Col. Tom Moe of Lancaster, an Ohio delegate who served as a prisoner of war in North Vietnam with John McCain. Moe recalled how he used to look through a pinhole in his cell door and see a beaten McCain returning from torture sessions and giving him a thumbs up.

Ohio House Speaker Jon Husted, R-Kettering, was sitting next to Moe in the front row on Wednesday and helped the TV cameras zero in on him.

"We had a convention watching party here and everyone went nuts (when they saw Moe on TV)," said McCain Ohio spokesman Paul Lindsay.

In St. Paul, Bridget Schuster, an Avon delegate, went beyond being impressed: She predicted Palin would be the first female president of the United States after McCain finishes his time.

"This has far exceeded the highest expectations," Schuster said. "She is going to blow away the United States."

How do you think Sarah Palin's speech Wednesday will change the race?

Other then bashing Obama what substance did it have? NONE. What is their plan for us…the working american? OBAMA HAS A PLAN. then why is it no one seems to know what that plan is. why is it that people cant see the only thing Obama has going for him is he is black and there are people out there that are so afraid of being a racist that dare not judge him for who he realy is.

Reading these comments I’d assume economics don’t exist!

Ever heard of sub-prime mortgages? That’s what caused this downturn, not anything the Bush administration did. Last I checked economic issues was not a part of the President’s job description; (the Constitution, I suggest you refresh on it) just being Commander in Chief of the military and making the State of the Union Address. CONTROL of the FREE MARKET will only drive more jobs away from home, but people don’t seem to understand that…

John F - Who says she is guilty? She will have to opportunity to plead her case and prove her innocence. The bridge to nowhere? Once she got more information she realized it wasn’t a good idea. Yes, even politicians can change their mind…Democrats and Republicans both do it all of the time.

Also, I believe it was a Democrat who disgraced this country by getting a ** job in the oval office. Yes, Mrs. Morals is exactly what we need in this country.

Funny how his birth year is listed as 1989… but we can set that one aside. What’s very funny is that you didn’t touch her soon to be indicted status from the Alaska legislature. Wow, not even elected VP yet, and already facing indictment. Also notice that you didn’t mention her fib on the bridge to nowhere (Hey! just like the repub’s leadership vision…)Gotta hand it to the Repubs… they get indicted much faster these days.

Hey John F. - Sarah Palin’s oldest son is 18, which means he was born in 1990. Guess you were wrong about that, huh? Also, didn’t Obama admit to using cocaine? So what’d the deal about drug use? It only counts if you are bashing a Republican?

Lajollajule - …and, so, can you say Obama doesn’t parade his family?

I am disgusted how the McCain/Palin campaign parades Palin’s family around and then complains that the press is unfair. I don’t want to know about her family, I want to know if she is capable of running a country. I am also disgusted that she is only on the ticket because Hillary is not. It well known that the inteligent people in our country happen to be Republican. It’s funny to read when some democrat writes that we are idiots or dumb, and usually can’t spell either word or use them in context. Actors are uneducated and usually have drug and alcohol problems, professors live in their books and wouldn’t survive in the real world (that’s why they teach) and the other ignorant people all seem to cling to the democrat party thinking they will make the world a big daisy garden.

My God teaches me that family comes over community any day. It seems her committment to being a governor has already taken a toll on her family. The Manchurian Candidate Becomes A Reality. God Help Us.

Obama, whose father was a practicing Muslim and whose mother was a radical Marxist, has stated that his mother: “Was the dominant figure in my formative years; and, the values she taught me continue to be my touchstone in the world of politics”. Common sense deductive reasoning suggests that Obama’s rearing as a child, and his extended 20yr relationships, and obvious conformity, with anti-American fanatics such as Rev. Wright ( the Pastor of his church that promoted the doctrine of Louis Farrakhan ) , and Frank Davis and William Ayers, etc., etc., are in fact reflective of Obama’s true psychological makeup. A conclusion rigidly re-enforced by Obama’s San Francisco commentary denigrating folks from small-town America. Obama’s affinity for questionable associates such as Tony Rezco, a convicted felon, raises a myriad of questions. Further, his increasingly frequent petulant responses to legitimate criticism is troubling. This man’s refusal to wear an American flag lapel pin and to place his hand over his heart on the singing of our National Anthem are conditioned reflexes from his protracted association with disaffected elements in our society; visual images that Obama is certain to attempt to obfuscate in future campaign appearances; even though, he has openly admitted: “I didn’t want to offend Muslims and others who don’t like America.”. Obama is our “home-grown” version of Hugo Chavez. Further, Michelle Obama’s angry commentary directed at our country is telling. Fifty-seven (57) State Obama’s comments that he would use U.S. Military Forces against Pakistan, a Nation with a sizable nuclear arsenal, and an ally in the war on terror, even without President Musharraf’s permission; a Nation that he mistakenly believed to be Arab; his indecision/confusion as to whether Iran poses a serious regional threat; while in other commentary, stating that he would halt the U.S. military’s development of advanced weapons systems demonstrates a profound ignorance of the geopolitical threat environment confronting America. His long-term subversive associations, and his immersion in seditious diatribe have indeed revealed Obama as the real-life Manchurian Candidate.

…she cut costs in the Alaskan budget by getting rid of a jet, a limo and a chef. This is common sense that may apply in her Governor role but you can’t do that as VP. It will take more creativity to be productive at that level.

Also I love the hypocrisy in the characterization of McCain. “One candidate has served his country, the others haven’t”. The same applied in 2004, but it wasn’t convenient for GOP so Kerry got bashed for it.

FORMER ARKANSAS GOV. MIKE HUCKABEE: Palin “got more votes running for mayor of Wasilla, Alaska than Joe Biden got running for president of the United States.”

THE FACTS: A whopper. Palin got 616 votes in the 1996 mayor’s election, and got 909 in her 1999 re-election race, for a total of 1,525. Biden dropped out of the race after the Iowa caucuses, but he still got 76,165 votes in 23 states and the District of Columbia where he was on the ballot during the 2008 presidential primaries.

FORMER MASSACHUSETTS GOV. MITT ROMNEY: “We need change, all right — change from a liberal Washington to a conservative Washington! We have a prescription for every American who wants change in Washington — throw out the big-government liberals, and elect John McCain and Sarah Palin.”

THE FACTS: A Back-to-the-Future moment. George W. Bush, a conservative Republican, has been president for nearly eight years. And until last year, Republicans controlled Congress. Only since January 2007 have Democrats have been in charge of the House and Senate

When people mention that obama has no “executive experience” they are very misled. The fact is he has overseen the most profitable and well managed political campaign in American history with tens of thousands of employees and volunteers. He has been running this campaign longer then Palin has been governor of a state with 30 people in it. She made no mention of policy in her speech. She lied about turning down the bridge to no where. She campaigned in 2006 that she would have it built!!!!

MCCAIN: “She’s the commander of the Alaska National Guard. … She has been in charge, and she has had national security as one of her primary responsibilities,” he said on ABC.

THE FACTS: While governors are in charge of their state guard units, that authority ends whenever those units are called to actual military service. When guard units are deployed to Iraq or Afghanistan, for example, they assume those duties under “federal status,” which means they report to the Defense Department, not their governors. Alaska’s national guard units have a total of about 4,200 personnel, among the smallest of state guard organizations.

By nursecilla

September 4, 2008 10:37 AM | Link to this

MCCAIN: “She’s been governor of our largest state, in charge of 20 percent of America’s energy supply … She’s responsible for 20 percent of the nation’s energy supply. I’m entertained by the comparison and I hope we can keep making that comparison that running a political campaign is somehow comparable to being the executive of the largest state in America,” he said in an interview with ABC News’ Charles Gibson.

THE FACTS: McCain’s phrasing exaggerates both claims. Palin is governor of a state that ranks second nationally in crude oil production, but she’s no more “responsible” for that resource than President Bush was when he was governor of Texas, another oil-producing state. In fact, her primary power is the ability to tax oil, which she did in concert with the Alaska Legislature. And where Alaska is the largest state in America, McCain could as easily have called it the 47th largest state — by population.

By nursecilla

September 4, 2008 10:34 AM | Link to this

PALIN: “There is much to like and admire about our opponent. But listening to him speak, it’s easy to forget that this is a man who has authored two memoirs but not a single major law or reform — not even in the state senate.”

THE FACTS: Compared to McCain and his two decades in the Senate, Obama does have a more meager record. But he has worked with Republicans to pass legislation that expanded efforts to intercept illegal shipments of weapons of mass destruction and to help destroy conventional weapons stockpiles. The legislation became law last year. To demean that accomplishment would be to also demean the work of Republican Sen. Richard Lugar of Indiana, a respected foreign policy voice in the Senate. In Illinois, he was the leader on two big, contentious measures in Illinois: studying racial profiling by police and requiring recordings of interrogations in potential death penalty cases. He also successfully co-sponsored major ethics reform legislation.

Very good point Lee…where is their plan. Last night sounded EXACTLY like the convention in 2004. All talk about keeping us safe. The #1 issue is the economy and they have NOTHING to say. Next up should be energy, jobs, education….and they have NOTHING to say. Palin gave a strong speech…written for her. I’m just not sure how being a POW and a governor of a state that smaller than Cincinnati qualifies people to lead this country.

PALIN: “I have protected the taxpayers by vetoing wasteful spending … and championed reform to end the abuses of earmark spending by Congress. I told the Congress ‘thanks but no thanks’ for that Bridge to Nowhere.”

THE FACTS: As mayor of Wasilla, Palin hired a lobbyist and traveled to Washington annually to support earmarks for the town totaling $27 million. In her two years as governor, Alaska has requested nearly $750 million in special federal spending, by far the largest per-capita request in the nation. While Palin notes she rejected plans to build a $398 million bridge from Ketchikan to an island with 50 residents and an airport, that opposition came only after the plan was ridiculed nationally as a “bridge to nowhere.”

Boring speech. All she did was play up media articles that ridiculed Obama. Sorry but this lady is too much of a nut case, I like McCain, but he’s old and this fanatic should not be allowed to be president.

Has anyone seen that video of her speech at her church dictating to kids that we are in Iraq as part of God’s will? She also mentions that if they need reforms in Alaska then the solution is to “pray”. That kind of stupidity is scary.

I just don’t get it, she didn’t talk about the issues, all she did was bash Obama and that makes people want to vote for her. I admit the speech was good, she seems like a nice lady with a nice family. But with that being said I feel people need to look at some of the things she stands for and if your morals and values align with hers then you should vote McCain/Palin. But don’t base your decisions on her being a woman,a soccer mom with a special needs child. That’s just Tom Foolery!

There was nothing said about the ecomomy, education, forclosure rate, health care…just more WAR MONGERING. I hope the American people see this. How is JM suppose to change government, when he has been apart of it for 100 years? HE SUPPORTS BUSH AND THIS WILL BE ANOTHER 4 YEARS OF WHAT WE HAVE HAD. DO YOU WANT THAT?????? What is their plan for digging us out of the hole we are in? They say the war has almost been won, yeah IRAQ has a 50 BILLION $$ surplus and we have a gazillion $$ deficit.WTF?

Sounds like more of the same empty rhetoric we’ve heard from Bush these last 8 years. For a party that often criticizes Obama as giving “great speechs with zero substance”, they sure went out of their way to do that very thing last night. All I heard from her was one-liners and insults, rather than any real advocacy for her running mate or her campaigns platform.

Same old tired republican lines of “they want to make government bigger”, “raise taxes”, “blah, blah, blah”.

I was not a John McCain enthusiast, but I give him my full support with the selection of Sarah Palin. He couldn’t have made a better choice. Not only was it a spectacular speech, but it was delivered without the screaming and screeching we have had to endure with Hillary Clinton speeches. It is great to have a woman on the ticket.

Though her detractors point out it was speech written by Matt Scully, Sarah Palin delivered it with an earnest enthusiasm. I appreciate her drive to serve and I think her record supports her assertions. It is time for a woman VPresident and Sarah Palin is definitely right for America.

if anderson cooper was an indication she scared the media, he was almost shaking in his seat. the cnn analysts started discusing how the had treated the republicans differently. this is election is still a long way to go and lots of things can happen, but as a conservative I was pleased.
