Obama talks with ABX workers about jobs

RIVERSIDE — Sen. Barack Obama promised to make saving jobs like those at ABX in Wilmington a top priority now and if he is elected president.
Speaking to reporters after giving a speech on education Tuesday, Sept. 9, the Democratic nominee said, "This is an issue that is going to effect me as president because one of the central beliefs I have in running is, unless we strengthen our manufacturing base, if we strengthen middle class job growth, in places like Ohio, Michigan, Indiana, Illinois, our economy is going to continue to be held up."
He said that to about 15 employees of ABX who he me privately with after his speech.
The workers are among about 8,200 who stand to lose their job if DHL transfers cargo work to UPS in Kentucky.
Obama said his staff is working with local officials to make sure all options are considered in Wilmington. He said he supports Congressional hearings to examiner the anti-trust implications of the DHL-UPS deal.
Also Tuesday, he denounced President Bush's announcement of troop reductions in Iraq and said the president is continuing to make "the same strategic mistakes."
