Sixty area postal stations still without power

By Ron Jackson

Staff Writer

DAYTON — Dayton-area postal carriers are giving credence to their unofficial motto about “swift completion of their annointed rounds amid rain and other adversity.”

“It didn’t say without power,” said Bonni Manies, U.S. Postal Service communications specialist for the Cincinnati district. “God bless our carriers. Many don’t have electricity at home, either.”

Manies said 60 out of 225 stations have no power. In the Dayton area, those stations include Paul Lawrence Dunbar in west Dayton, Centerville, Washington Twp. and the Wright Brothers station on Brown Street in Oakwood.

“We had 80 to 90 hampers out on the dock and the parking lots doing the casing and taking care of next round of parcels,” said Darryl Myers, Dayton postmaster general. “Some had flashlights. I’m very proud of our work force. They really showed their mettle, coming through in adversity after seeing the devastating damage Sunday.”

The biggest problems, he said, are downed power lines and “animal control.”

“We had a young carrier from our Northridge station who was attacked by a pit bull and was bit in the face, hand and leg,” Myers said. “Normally, the dog would be chained and inside. Here, there were no restraints. The pit bull broke through and got to the carrier, knocking him down.”
