DAYTON — Dayton Daily News columnist Dale Huffman was inducted this morning, Thursday, Sept. 25, into the Dayton Walk of Fame at the Center for Regional Cooperation.
Huffman was one of five inductees to join a long list of famous Dayton natives, dating back to those born as early as 1800. They include the Rev. Leo Meyer, a founder and first president of the University of Dayton, and aviation pioneers Orville and Wilbur Wright.
A Walk of Fame stone bearing Huffman's name and an inscribed tribute to the man known for his heartwarming stories and humanitarian work and approach to writing has been installed along the sidewalk in front of Bing Davis Studio at 1135 W. Third St.
When introducing Huffman, Maribeth Graham, chairwoman for the Walk of Fame judges, reminded the audience of the several names Huffman often is referred to, including "Capt. Light," "Mr. Dayton," and the "Ambassador of Goodwill."
During the course of his 50 years as a journalist, 40 with the Dayton Daily News and 35 as a columnist, Huffman has interviewed such celebrities and historic people as George Burns, Carol Burnett, Martin Luther King Jr., and John F. Kennedy.
And while he's shared time with such "greats," Graham said, "he still maintains his humility."
Huffman earlier this year went on a five-month medical leave to deal with kidney cancer. He returned July 7 to writing his record-breaking and award-winning column.
In accepting the award, Huffman said it "touches my heart, touches my soul and makes me think a lot."
Huffman talked about having been an orphan as a child and how that time instilled in him a "desire to help others" and to make a difference in the lives of others — something Huffman said he's been able to do through his writings.
Huffman thanked the Walk of Fame committee for recognizing the many inspirational and famous Dayton natives on their list as a way to remind children of the future of Dayton's shining stars.
"Thank you from the bottom of my heart," he said.

Mr. Huffman,
In 1986 you wrote a column about my mother, Cindy WIlde Vogel, who was battling breast cancer. She used to talk of you up until her death in 1988…this the effect you have on people. Your compassion and generosity have finally been rewarded.

Dale’s induction to the Walk of Fame will also remind future generations of the value of sharing positive things, which will help inspire young writers to follow his path.
What a great legacy, and a remarkable person.
I’m so happy that he’s feeling better, and able to help us all smile a little more than we might otherwise.
