High-speed chase started over illegal U-turn

TROY — A police chase involving several local law enforcement agencies Friday morning, Sept. 26, began after the driver of the car made an illegal U-turn, according to Troy police.
Troy police noticed a white Cadillac with temporary tags occupied by three black males make an illegal turn on Adams Street, near Troy Junior High School, according to Capt. Joe Long.
The driver fled when an officer attempted a traffic stop and drove south onto Interstate 75, where Tipp City and Vandalia police got involved, Long said.
Long said the pursuit was canceled near Vandalia, north of the construction zone, for safety considerations.
The Ohio Highway Patrol then got involved near the Montgomery County line and chased the Cadillac to the Needmore Road exit of I-75 where, at some point, the right rear tire blew out sometime after the car ran the traffic light at Needmore and North Dixie Drive, said patrol Lt. Doug Eck.
The chase was called off again for safety concerns, but an officer spotted the Cadillac turn onto to Republic Drive.
The three men then bailed out of the car in the Northland Village apartment complex on Republic and a police dog was unable to find them.
The Cadillac was towed back to Troy, where it was going to be inspected by police, Eck said.
It is unclear why the driver fled, Long said. He said Troy police protocol allows officers to chase vehicles during certain situations and allows them to be canceled by officers.
He said officers involved in any chase must make out a "chase report" to submit to their immediate supervisor. Long said he was not aware of any other reason for the chase besides the driver fleeing from officers after making an illegal U-turn.
