Quick police work catches suspected carjackers

A vehicle stolen in a carjacking in Miami Twp. at about 1 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 30, was recovered 20 minutes later in Dayton, police said.
Police received a call about 1 a.m. from a man who said he had been robbed in the parking lot of a Kroger store at the corner of Alex-Bell Road and Springboro Pike, according to Sgt. Jerry Adams of the Miami Twp. police.
Adams said the complainant said he was in his car when he was approached by two young men who pointed a silver handgun at him and demanded his wallet, his keys and his car.
"He did the right thing and complied with their demands," Adams said.
When police arrived at the scene they found a green Cavalier that had been reporting stolen in a carjacking in Harrison Twp. a short time earlier, Adams said. He said police believe the same two young men carjacked the Cavalier, abandoned it for some reason and carjacked the second car in the Kroger lot.
Miami Twp. police broadcast a bulletin alerting neighboring departments to be on the lookout for the stolen car, and they got word about 20 minutes later that Dayton police had spotted the vehicle.
Adams said as soon as the Dayton cruiser turned on its overhead lights and attempted to get the car to stop, the driver stopped and he and his passenger got out of the car and ran.
The two men were caught after a short chase in the 4100 block of Prescott Avenue near Middlehurst Lane, according to a Dayton police dispatch supervisor.
The identities of the two men, ages 18 and 19, were not released.
