DARKE COUNTY — A body found Saturday afternoon, Oct. 4, in a secluded section of the state wildlife area and public hunting grounds off US 36 East is believed to be that of Michael Eberwein, 50, of Greenville, according to the Darke County Sheriff's Office.

Family members reported Eberwein missing on Sept. 12, and the Greenville Police Department has been investigating his disappearance since then.

A call early Saturday afternoon about an abandoned vehicle in the woods along the 7400 block of US 36 East led authorities to discover the body of an adult male subject nearby. While the vehicle was identified as belonging to Eberwein, a positive identification of the body is pending forensic examination at the Montgomery County Coroner's Office.

"Evidence at the scene suggests that the deceased may be the missing Michael Eberwein from Greenville, and that he died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound," according to Det. Sgt. Mark Whittaker of the Darke County Sheriff's Office.
