DAYTON — The board of the Dayton Urban League has selected Sheldon L. Mitchell as the new president and chief executive of the Dayton Urban League. Mitchell succeeds long-time CEO Willie F. Walker, who retired in June.

Mitchell comes to the Dayton Urban League from the Urban League of the Upstate in Greenville, S.C., where he served for six years as its executive director.

"The (Dayton Urban League) board is thrilled to have Sheldon and his family join, not only our Urban League family, but the entire Dayton area community," said Thomas Holton, Dayton Urban League board chair.

Mitchell, a native of upstate South Carolina, has worked as a non-profit executive for the past 17 years.

Mitchell is a graduate of the University of South Carolina in Columbia, S.C., where he earned a bachelor's degree in political science. He later earned his master's degree in human resource development and management from Webster University in Greenville, S.C.

Mitchell is married to Cassandra Shannon Mitchell, and they have three sons – Justin, Wesley, and Isaiah. He will begin his tenure as president Dec. 1.
