TROY — Miami County had more than $900,000 reported in costs associated with response to the Sept. 14 windstorm.

The amounts submitted are not final numbers, but are up to date as of Tuesday, Oct. 7, when representatives of the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the Ohio EMA met with locals to talk about reporting and possible reimbursement of costs, said Ken Artz, county EMA director.

The county commissioners declared an emergency in the county Sept. 18, laying the groundwork for reimbursement of public entities, if federal funding is approved.

Cost estimates from local jurisdictions — cities, townships, villages, schools — total $671,725 with another $230,000 from the Pioneer Rural Electric Cooperative.

Among the local entities' cost estimates: $150,835 from the city of Troy; $103,000 from Piqua and $23,600 from the Forest Hill Cemetery at Piqua; $70,500 from Tipp City; $54,975 from Concord Twp.; $58,400 from Covington; $68,500 from Miami County Engineer's Department; and $4,700 from Miami East schools.

Artz said the cost figures are for public entities, not individual homeowners, who need to work with insurance companies on loss claims.

Clean up work continues in some areas.

Troy officials on Wednesday said the city will complete the final collection of windstorm debris next week. Residents are asked to place debris — entire trees, limbs, branches — in the curb in front of their residence no later than Monday, Oct. 13.

The city will not collect debris from properties located on private streets but residents may deposit the debris at the Dye Mill Road facility.
