Salvation Army expects more to seek aid

DAYTON — The Dayton command of the Salvation Army is expecting even more than last year's record of 5,200 families to apply for holiday assistance. The campaign kicks off its Christmas campaign on Monday, Nov. 3.
"It's going to be a tough year with all the multiple layoffs and plant closings," Major Tom Duperree said on Thursday, Oct. 9.
The Salvation Army itself has had to cut five positions. During this fiscal year, the group is $40,000 to $50,000 over budget, he said.
"The same problems that are ailing our community, they're not foreign to us either," he said. "You hate doing it but the bottom line is you can't spend what you don't have."
Throughout the year, the Salvation Army helps people in need by providing assistance for such things as rental and utility payments, food and sometimes prescriptions. The Salvation Army never considered doing away with the Christmas food program that it has done annually since it came to Dayton in 1888.
"We would never make a decision to compromise the mission of the Salvation Army, to meet human need," he said.
This year's "holiday gift baskets" contain a turkey and a Kroger gift card based on a family's size.
Applications will be taken at 138 S. Wilkinson St. from 9 a.m. to noon on Nov. 3, Nov. 5, Nov. 10 and Nov. 11. Working applicants only may apply from 5-7 p.m. on Nov. 10.
Applicants must bring a photo ID of each adult in the household; Social Security card of medical card for each child; proof of income and proof of current address.
