Police are investigating after U.S. Rep. Jean Schmidt, R-Loveland, was hit by a car while jogging Wednesday morning.
Schmidt was running on Loveland-Miamiville Road near her Miami Twp. home at about 5:45 a.m. when she noticed a car coming toward her, said her spokesman, Bruce Pfaff.
As the car approached, she turned and jumped out of the way, but the car ultimately caught her on her right hip, and she was thrown a few feet off the road. The car, Pfaff said, didn't "really swerve at her, but it didn't veer away from her."
Schmidt was wearing a reflective vest, white hat and had a lamp at the time she was struck.
The driver didn't stop and Schmidt flagged down a good Samaritan who drove her home. She later went to a local hospital where she was treated and released for bruising and contusions on her hip and ribs.
She was back in her district office and working Wednesday afternoon.
Miami Twp. police are investigating, Pfaff said. Schmidt described the car as a gray sedan, and told police it was probably damaged.
Schmidt's office alerted U.S. Capitol Police of the incident.
Schmidt, 56, who is running for her third term in Congress, has run 73 marathons, most recently one at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base last month. She finished second out of 19 women in her class, with a time of 3 hours, 55 minutes and 11 seconds, Pfaff said.
Schmidt was unavailable for comment Friday because she left Friday afternoon on a trip to the Middle East. She will return Monday night.
She will return Monday night.
She will face Democrat Victoria Wulsin and independent David Krikorian in the Nov. 4. election.
