Unoccupied house in Harrison Twp. burns

HARRISON TWP., Montgomery County — Fire and rescue crews quickly extinguished a fire that started in the basement of a unoccupied house at 185 Shoup Mill Road on Monday night, Oct. 13.
Crews were called to the scene about 9:20 and almost immediately brought the fire under control, Harrison Twp. Fire Chief Mark Lynch said.
The cause of the fire was not immediately pinpointed, though the home's owner, Dale Nieberding, said he expects most of the house to be damaged by smoke and water.
"There was smoke coming from the attic of the house and they told me the fire started in the basement, so it seems that there is a lot damage," Nieberding said.
The two-story house was full of clothing, furniture and food that Nieberding said his Good Shepherd Ministries gives away for free to people who are struggling to "make ends meet."
He said he has owned the home for 10 years and he had just finished repainting the inside of it.
Fire crews from Clayton, Trotwood, Englewood, Dayton and Harrison Twp. remained on the scene as of 11:30 p.m. as Shoop Mill Road remained closed east of North Main Street.
