Rape reported at Miami fraternity

Staff Report

Tuesday, October 14, 2008

OXFORD — A rape at a Miami University fraternity house has prompted the university to issue another crime alert.

Oxford police are investigating a report of a rape of a female student that occurred at the Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity house, 112 S. Campus Ave. in the early morning hours of Sunday, Oct. 12, according to the university's crime alert sent out Tuesday, Oct. 14.

Police said alcohol was a factor in the assault.

TKE President and Miami junior Steven Uchida said he didn't know about the alleged rape until the crime alert was issued. Uchida said he didn't want to comment until he talked to police and university officials about the accusation.

The report of the rape follows a handful of early morning incidents this past weekend in which women told police they either escaped an attempted abduction or were harassed. The attempted abduction prompted the university to issue a crime alert.

In that instance, a 20-year-old Miami University student told police she was walking on South Beech Street near Mesler Auto Body around 4 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 11, when two men grabbed her from behind and attempted to force her into their van, according to police.

She was able to break free of their grasp and run to her residence, Squance said.

Shortly after word got out regarding the attempted kidnapping, police said four women contacted them after reportedly having been harassed by two males driving a white van around town in the early morning hours of Oct. 11.
