Dayton has a new fire chief

DAYTON — The city of Dayton has a new fire chief.
Dayton City Manager Rashad Young today, October 17, named Herbert C. Redden as the director and chief of the Dayton Fire Department. Redden, who has been serving as interim director and chief since May, takes on the role permanently on Monday, October 20.
He will earn $112,000 a year.
Redden has more than 30 years of professional firefighting experience, including serving as Dayton's assistant chief of emergency operations from early 2005 to mid 2008.
Before coming to Dayton, Redden served nearly eight years as deputy director of the Memphis, Tennessee, Fire Department overseeing about 1,600 employees. He joined the Memphis department as a firefighter in 1969 and retired there in January of 2000.
Redden's management experience includes oversight of a full scope of fire fighting functions including: incident command, hazardous materials mitigation, disaster response, investigation, building inspection, and administrative duties including personnel and program management.
His education and training include a master's degree in operations management from the University of Arkansas in 2001, along with 16 additional National Fire Academy courses.
"Herb Redden brings a remarkably strong variety of management skill and fire fighting experience to the job of Dayton Fire Chief," Young said. "He has already demonstrated outstanding dedication and leadership in our city."
