News anchor Carl Day faces new bout with leukemia
Tuesday, November 04, 2008
Carl Day, the veteran news anchor at WDTN-TV, Channel 2, has confirmed that the leukemia he has fought, off and on since 1997, has returned for a fourth time.
When speaking of his leukemia, Day, who is 70, said "I have been there, done that three times, and I will beat it this time as well."
He said he had been hospitalized for several weeks and added, "I am having a little different treatment than in the past. But my attitude is much the same."
Day has been commended for his "never give up" approach to the leukemia.
He has said, "I honestly feel I am going to survive it all. I am facing this challenge with the same strong feelings that I can beat it, just as I did before. I am not down and I don't plan to hit the mat."
In a recorded statement made from the hospital and carried Monday, Nov. 3 on TV2 News, Day said he wanted to let viewers know how he is feeling and "to have the opportunity to answer some questions and address the rumors going around."
He said his medical troubles are "two-fold this time."
Day said that in addition to the leukemia he is being treated for a fall he took.
"I fell and did some neurological damage to my nerves in the back which pretty much put my right leg out of commission. I am having a little problem walking...some limitations."
He continued, "I just miss not getting around. I really appreciate what anyone who has to live in a wheel chair goes through. I never had to do that before. But each time you go through one of these things you learning something different, don't you."
It was in April of 1997 that Day was first diagnosed and began fighting for his life. Each time he has bravely faced down the cancer he has done so very publicly, allowing news cameras to come along and chronicle the treatments and the challenges.
He said he wanted to share the fight to help others who might have to face a similar medical crisis.
During his 50 years broadcasting career Day has won seven Emmys, four of them as Dayton's top television news anchor. He is a pilot and a race car driver, and is active in dozens of local charities.

Dear Mr. Day, I lived in Akron, OH just around the corner from you. I lived on Letchworth Drive and went to King School with Holly. Holly and I played together a great deal back then and I remember your being on the radio at that time.
Years later, when I married and had a family of my own, we moved to Centerville and to my surprise you were on the news as an anchor. It really took me back to my days in Akron.
I wish you well Mr. Day!

Dear Carl, Or as Elyssa our granddaughter calls you “Carlo”. We hope you got the shell. Elyssa (3 yrs old) brought you and the purple pansy flowers. She carried them so tightly in her little hands. She told the lady at the desk she loves you and wants you to be her husband. She looked so concerned when she was told you are married… Then that was ok but she still loves you. As do so many in the Dayton area. You have become an important part of all our lives. God bless you we all love u.

On behalf of the family, I wish to express thanks and gratitude for the outpouring of wonderful wishes. Carl is doing very well, and we are very hopeful that he will beat the odds again for a fourth time. And, just to clarify for the one person who questioned the timing of this relapse, I can assure you that Carl would rather swim naked through an alligator-filled swamp for a ratings boost than deal with any cancer!

I know you will win this battle, the Dayton news scene is not the same with out you. Get better buddy so we can see you back at Marsha’s side each afternoon. She looks lonely anchoring without you. I also remember years ago when you both co-anchored at Channel 22 and was thrilled when you rejoined her at Channel 2. You are in our prayers.

Carl,
I know what you are going through with your chemotherapy treatments to fight your leukemia because I saw my own mother received chemotherapy treatments for breast cancer. You and your family are in my thoughts and prayers. There is some sad news about my mom’s battle with cancer. I unfortunately lost my mother to cancer that spread to her liver three years ago. Keep fighting, Carl.

Carl, I had leukemia as a child, and I’m 56 years old now. I know how it is to be death-defying ill. Don’t even THINK you can’t lick this! Please receive strength from all of us writing to you. Why? God has enlisted all of us to help, through support of you, and through prayers for you. Your medical team may seem detached at times, and clinical, but they know they’re doing God’s work in helping you recover. All of our love from Georgia…Wordell & Kathryn.
