Voting appeared to be going smoothly in the Miami Valley on Election Day, but some polling places were reporting malfunctioning voting machines, said Catherine Petersen, a spokeswoman for Montgomery County's Board of Elections

The board has "over 30 troubleshooters, and they were getting there within 15 minutes of the call and fixing the problem," she said.

Voters at St. Charles School in Kettering, however, said most of the nine voting machines there were not working until 10 a.m. or later on Tuesday, Nov. 4.

Diana Scharf of Kettering said she waited a half hour to fill out a paper ballot at around 10 a.m., but some voters waited an hour.

"We did a lot of paper ballots, but people stayed and voted," said Bev Pemberton, the presiding judge for Kettering Precinct 3M.

A troubleshooter arrived at 9:30 a.m. to fix the machines, she said.

Ellis Jacobs, lead attorney for the Miami Valley Voter Protection Coalition said the group's workers had heard of "a significant number" of problems with voting machines during morning voting. By noon he said they appeared to be tapering off.

His group has representatives at several dozen precincts monitoring complaints and had heard of machine problems at about a dozen.

Lea.. maybe the reason you’ve always voted at a church.. is because they have parking lots.. for MANY to park their cars!! Duhh. Have u ever voted on a Sunday? NO.. prolly cuz the church needs their parking lots and extra rooms back for service. Suppose we could all go down to the local Kmart parking lot. Whatever! If it bothers you so much, maybe you should have mailed in your vote and stayed away from those awful churches. Get over it already!

Roger Reynolds got re-elected. What a thief! rogers/reynolds=CROOKS. Property values down 10% and most everyone’s property value goes up? What a freakin joke. How in the heck anyone could vote for this criminal is beyond me. If you voted for him and your taxes go up you get exactly what you deserve! 1300 sq ft house w/10 acres of land, some land is just brush, some woods. $3100+ before tax hike. Eyes in the back of your head Mr. Reynolds? Better watch out you thief SOB!

I worked the polls at a NE Dayton precinct, all of the machines were working, no lines longer than 15 minutes. It was excited to see families of all races come in together. Individuals in poor health still coming out to vote. Many first time voters. I was frustrated by the Secretary of State confusing the process with two lines, & forcing us to promote paper ballots. Yes, they should be available, but should not be used as a second voting procedure. We invested too much tax $$ in the machines.

I must say the preceding comments on this “comment site” are very entertaining. Yesterday, I went to my poling place in Hamilton, Ohio, at the Stephin Badin High School & had no problems, no waiting lines, very helpful pole workers. I used the computerized voting machine with no problem.

Although my candidate did not win, it should be a most interesting 4 years with the candidate that did win. We all need to support our new president in these very difficult times. We are all Americans.

Oh, I wanted to add, poll workers get about $100 to work over 15 hours - no one is doing it for the money!! It’s a very long exhausting day, but the time goes quickly and you meet a lot of great people. Every poll workers does their best to make the experience a good one for every voter and we had many tell us they appreciated what we were doing - as usual, my trust in the goodness of the vast majority of people was reconfirmed.

Worked a 15.5 hour shift in SW Clark county. It was a great experience and although many came early, no one had to wait more than and hour and spirits were very good and no one complained, although a few decided to return later when we had no lines. Great turnout percentage in my precinct - many first time voters who were quite excited and many people who needed some help due to their health. A great example of America at it’s very best - now let’s all agree to give this new man a chance!!

Very smooth at Smith Elementary School in Oakwood at about 10 a.m. on Election Day. The wait was about 10-15 minutes, but you could get through faster by using a paper ballot. The poll workers seemed to have everything pretty much under control.

I voted for McCain not because I felt he was the best choice, but he has experience. The problem with this country is a Congress and Senate who wont work for this country and support the President. I hope and pray after hearing from every black person on TV today get over the fact Obama is black he isn’t he is bi racial and should be judged not by his color. Let’s see and judge this man as a man as new elected President time will only tell how what type of leader he is.

Thanks to all the liberal idiots that voted the Talawanda Levy in effect. Just one or two questions. First off all, the ignorant college kids you talked into voting for this levy, HOW MANY ARE GOING TO ACTUALLY BE PAYING FOR IT. Answer: zero.

Second : Alot of people are struggling to survive and can barely pay there property taxes. You all have achieved causing people to lose there homes they so dearly worked for. It will be interesting to see what this number will be.

Mark Butterfield was a dope smoking loser when he went to Talawanda. ASK anybody from his class. Don’t act like your important Mark because NO one RESPECTS you.

Something is wrong with your local government leaders to let that happen. For you to turn around and leave the polls, tells something about you. YOU DO NOT CARE. I bought into the “massive turnout” hype and showed up to my polling place early to avoid the crowd. BIG MISTAKE…everyone else had the same idea. I ended up waiting in line 30 minutes. When I drove by my polling place on the way home from work (when I normally vote), there was no line. Lesson learned… I’ll vote at my usual time next election.

And did I hear this morning that turnout wasn’t even as high as it was for the previous election?

Voted in Centerville at, arriving about 6:45 am to find a long line waiting outside. The reason, I believe, was a totally backward system at the tables. The elderly woman checking names was not in good health, and it took forever for her to find names in a spiral notebook. What happened to computers? After I received my card and voted using the electronic ballot, I had no idea what to do with the card and had to ask someone who said, “Give it to Steve.” Of course, I had no idea who Steve was.

But was told I hadn’t voted in 17 years abnd absenteed balloted for several of them. (Of course, 1 year they never received the ballot back) Wouldn’t have mattered anyway. After this sour experience not planning on voting again.

I really had to think hard before I voted for President today. With 2 such miserable frauds, Obama and McCain running in the Presidential race neither presented much of an alternative to the status quo. I couldn’t work up enthusiasm for either major party candidate. Bob Barr, Charles Baldwin and Ralph Nader all looked much better. I even toyed with the idea of writing in Pat Buchanan for President and Paul Craig Roberts for VP…

The embrace of globalization and subordinaton of national interest to corporate domination has made voting in this election an utterly wasted effort.

I showed up at the polls to vote on local and statewide issues and only incidentally bothered to cast a vote for President.

The issue which most concerned me was Centerville’s attempt to acquire Washington Township. I don’t want any part of Centerville or the income tax they would impose. The fact that Centerville makes outrageous expenditures was clear on election eve. For example, drive over to Centerville and have a look at the nearly three-quarter of a million dollar “bridge to nowhere” which Centerville has erected on the I-675 / Rt 48 overpass near Alex-Bell.

If there’s an example of fiscal irresponsibility and municipal mismanagement this series of stone encrusted pillars and superfluous pseudo cast-iron fencing is surely it. The City cut down a perfectly functional safety fence which hadn’t even had time to rust to build this arrogant memorial to municipal arrogance and ambition. Absolutely maddening in light of the present economic deterioration of the area and the continuing fears if not misery felt by many area residents facing job losses.

I’m not at all impressed by the flashy fiscal irresponsibility of Centerville.

Overall, my expectation for the next four years is more of the same economic deterioration. Obama has shown he’s as willing as Bush or McCain to continue the offshoring and import of Third World workers.

It will be amusing to see how Obama deals with the mounting middle class job losses. Obama and other Democrats have been able to blame the Republican free traders for quite some time. Now that they are in power I hope they face an angry and impatient public. Dems have had the best of both worlds with Bush in office: the opportunity to blame the economic problems on the Repubs while pocketing plenty of K Street contributions.

First, no literature is to be inside the 100 foot line. Someone should have spoken to a polling place official, the election board or the Sheriff’s dept. Workers were short-handed as more were needed - you get paid for working the polls. Conflicting instructions have appeared in guides used by pollworkers requiring calls to the Board. People bring in improper ID - esp. waiting 3 years to change addresses on it. More calls for that. Places other than churches are used - schools, FOE bldgs, etc

I am terribly disappointed by those voting down Issue 6 - are YOU going to personally give jobs or money to the 5000 employees, and the 2600 construction workers who will now lose out? How do YOU feel about the millions of dollars annually that leave Ohio to Indiana and Kentucky casinos? Oh wait, that’s right, I forgot YOU like to take those ‘business trips’ to the boats to schmooz - really disappointing. The other states’ casino operators are laughing all the way to the bank.

Polls in WashTwnshp went quickly but for 2 things. 1st: lady wearing McCain/Palin shirt when voting. Thought that was against the rules? Being Centerville, only if in an Obama shirt would have she been thrown out. Think I am kidding? 2nd: a rude man in line went into another line he thought was shorter and became angry when his 1st line was moving more quickly. I am sure his gas guzzling oversized SUV was illegally parked; that is the self-entitled attitude in Cville. All others waited politely

If you tax the people who give out jobs, i.e. the vast majority of those making $250,000 or more, they will not take a loss in profit and given the current state of the economy, they will not likely raise prices, they will cut jobs!! Unfortunately, Barack Obama has the same supporters, acquaintances and alliances for more than two decades. The surprising and very concerning thing to me is the obvious apathy or non-consideration that most Americans give this.

My husband and I arrived at our voting location of Southminster Church in Centerville about 6:20 AM where there was already a line of about 25 people waiting inside the building. The first issue we encountered was that two of the four electronic voting machines were not functioning. A gentleman was trying to fix them, and eventually got one of the machines working by about 6:45 AM. When I left at 7:00 AM, there were still only three machines running.

Interested people were given paper ballot

Tbird65, I would wager no one ahead of me voted on any policy stand, race driven votes ONLY, since there was 15 black voters ahead of you. How would you know what their politics views are. You have no idea what their thought process is and what their views are. So please tell me, just who are you to judge. For once honestly its nice to have such a choice in the presidential race and yes I also all for Biden being VP.

If nObama manages to steal this election, I will not recognize him as my President. I will also be one of the first to rise up, Bible in one hand, gun in the other, when nObama starts to “Change” us into the USSA

Just an fyi Voted a Few times, you have to sign in to DDN and they can track your IP address it isn’t that hard and if you did vote more than one time and they find out who you are, you are guilty of a felony and will lose the right to vote ever again!

The question was about voting experience, not your personal political views. I took about 50 minutes to vote, 8 to 9 am, in Beavercreek, only because I waited on the electronic machines. Those using paper were in and out in about 20 minutes. I oppose early voting, except by nail-in ballot. Early voting opens the door for too many opportunities for fraud (ACORN!). The solution is more polling locations and machines, which would aviod the long lines.

I had the day off and wanted to try this, I voted 3 times already today,,,,,what a JOKE. This will be a mess tonight. This lady just asked me how to spell my name at one place. I honestly don’t believe she could read. We went to the K’s in her book and I pointed one out and said THAT’S ME and signed it like the other guy did.

My voting experience was pleasant at the poll. This chain of comments, however, is utterly disappointing. It doesn’t matter who our president is if the people of this country are so hateful toward each other. No man or woman on earth has a chance when this is the clay they are given to mold. Good luck to whomever wins, they will need it.

I am a 56 yr. old, married (for 35 yrs.), white, employed woman who is also a Democrat and I voted for Obama, not because he is a Democrat or because he is black or biracial, but because I agree with his polices and disagree with McCain’s. (Also because Palin is a freaking wacko.) To Democrat for McCain: Get the Hell out of my party! We don’t want bigoted jerks like you!

I’d just like to say that I’m a life-long “conservative” and today I voted for Obama. Race had absolutely nothing to do with it. I looked at their positions on key issues and who they had chose to surround themselves with both now and assuming they became president. Everyone in this country has one equal vote, and trying to marginalize one person’s vote because they belong to some demographic you don’t like or associate with is exactly the opposite of what this country is supposed to mean.

It took over two hours to vote this morning in Springboro where there were only four booths and paper was the only option. Never again. From now on I’ll vote absentee.

Voted around 12:15 at Vineyard Church in Beavercreek, everything went very smoothly. No lines, no downed machines. Was in and out in under 15 minutes.

Well after sitting through lunch break and reading some of this I can understand why Dayton is going downhill so fast.

Voted 6:30 this morning in Huber Heights, no problems ID’s checked. In and out in 20 minutes.

tbird65 - Do you REALLY believe those folks ahead of you were not using their brains?? You must have several homes like McCain or have unethically forced your way into your current position…maybe you have no idea what being disenfranchised means?? Maybe that’s why you belive a man hell bent on war and hand-outs to fatcats should lead this country at a time of major financial crisis, etc., or maybe you think a women who has difficulty conjucating verbs & formulating complete sentences should.

No matter who wins as president, watch what happens to our Senate and Congress balance of power. Starting in January heed the words of a great senator,”gird your loins” and buy some peanut butter.

tbird65, It’s interesting to me that anyone would equate casting a ballot for the McCain/Palin ticket as “using your brain.” Although “McCain: and “brain” is a cleaver rhyme, the Republican ticket became extremely anti-intellectual when he picked Palin as his VP to try to trick women and fundamentalist Christians into seeing past his regularly moderate opinions and vote for him. I have not been tricked. Obama ‘08!

Dearest Republicans and other (i’m looking at you, “Democrat for McCain”) whiners:

Stop moaning. The people of these United States are Doing Their Thing. The next president won’t be your little evangelical white pet unless your childish attempts at voter fraud, intimidation, and rigging somehow manage to be successful. Which they won’t, because most of you can barely work your internets without asking for help from younger, smarter, less oafish people.

Love, jeremy.

I have voted in Jefferson township now for 32 years . I have ALWAYS been the one of the 1st at the poles when they opened, and rarely ever saw any others.Today at 6:30am there were 15 black voters ahead of me in line. All I heard was Obama-Obama-Obama.I hope I am wrong, but I would wager no one ahead of me voted on any policy stand, race driven votes ONLY. Ignorance may win the day, too bad…………….Use yor brain, VOTE McCAIN!

Democrat for McCain is in for a RUDE awakening… “Those” kinds of comments will soon have no place in respectful conversations and he/she will then only be able to converse with other idiots. It is sad that ‘some’ folks refuse to be lead by what is right and what is good. We can disagree with one another but ignorance is still bliss. I am so glad President Elect Barack Obama will be recognized world-wide this time tomorrow. God Bless the USA!

Calm down gang, nobody is going to be persuaded at this point and by tomorrow I'll either be praying for my candidate or praying I was wrong and praying for the other candidate. Either way, we are on the same team as soon as the polls close.
No problems voting in Miamisburg...I was feeling a little retro so I got a paper ballot with no waiting.

I-work, it’s cool. There’s never anything wrong with good “conversation.” It’s just when emotions get involved things tend to become skewed. But now Mr or Miss Dem for McCain/Palin, you’re right it’s based on race. That’s why you are voting the way you are. Hey, at least you’re honest.

I can’t believe how many people complain that many black people are voting for Obama brcause he’s black. You can’t make that critique if you’re white. Black people SHOULD be proud that someone who is 1/2 “black” has come so far, after all the oppression and nonsense the race has endured. Americans, overall, should be tired of white patriarchal society. You see what it’s done to us. WE SHALL OVERCOME! (With peace and love and equality.)

Jeanne, I also voted at Smith School in Oakwood shortly after you did. By 8:00 (probably earlier) all the machines but one were working, and no one was using the paper ballots. They even made announcement “No waiting for paper ballots!” and still almost everyone wanted to use the machines.
