OAKWOOD — Keen observations from the victim of a home burglary and an Oakwood police officer led to the capture of a suspect Friday, Nov. 21, but not before a scuffle between the suspect and the officer.

Lt. Keith Benson was treated and released from Miami Valley Hospital, Chief Alex Bebris said, after "hanging onto" the suspect after "an extensive fight in the back of a residence" until other officers arrived.

The suspect is a 48-year-old Dayton man who is on parole after serving time in Lebanon Correctional Institution for a bank robbery, Bebris said.

The suspect was taken to the Oakwood City Jail. Police said they discovered jewelry in his possession that they believe came from the home that was burglarized. He also made some statements to police that implicated himself in the events that occurred, Bebris said.

The events began about 12:15 p.m., when police were notified that there was a burglary in progress at a house in the 300 block of Southview Road, Bebris said.

"There were officers in close proximity of that (address) ... at the same time the complainant was giving a description of who had been in the house, " Bebris said.

When asked how the burglar gained entry, Bebris said, "It is our belief that the house was not locked."

About that time, Benson spotted a person who matched the robber's description and tried to stop him. The suspect ran and ended up on East Thruston Boulevard.

Benson apprehended the suspect, Bebris said, and "the person decided that they were going to fight with the police. There was an extensive fight in the back of a residence of that location" and that's when Benson was injured.

No weapon was used, but Bebris described Benson as being "pretty banged up."

Police also found that a security alarm had been triggered at a home on Kramer Road about the same time, less than a mile from the address on Southview.

Friday's aggravated burglary is the second in Oakwood recently. The first occurred Oct. 2 when a woman was robbed in her home while her husband was in the yard.

Bebris said it's not clear if Friday's incident or the one in October are related. "I really think that it's too early to speculate on that. ... There are things that are similar about it and things that are not."

In the October burglary, one of two men who entered a home in the 300 block of East Thruston displayed a handgun and demanded cash and jewelry before leaving with some belongings. No arrests have been made.
