DAYTON — The Montgomery County Sheriff's Office will lay off five to 23 deputies as part of an effort to carve $2 million out of the county budget.
"Hopefully I'll be able to find some place in the middle, but we will definitely see layoffs effective Jan. 1," said Chief Deputy Mike Nolan on Tuesday, Dec. 2. The layoffs could come as early as next week.
He said road patrol and jail staff will not be cut. But sergeant positions will be eliminated, with some possibly transferred to the new Regional Dispatch Center. Other cuts will come in the number of deputies staffing court facilities, Nolan said.
The sheriff's office employs 500 people, including 159 deputies.
Like counties across Ohio and the state government, Montgomery County is struggling with flat or declining tax revenues. On Tuesday, county commissioners reviewed a spending plan that reduces 2009 general fund expenditures by 1.8 percent to $157.9 million.
Balancing the budget requires a 3 percent across-the-board cut by all county department heads and elected officials, and all have agreed to do so, county Administrator Deborah Feldman said. County commissioners will eliminate 29 jobs.
Neither Auditor Karl Keith nor the coroner, treasurer, or recorder are planning layoffs.
