CENTERVILLE — Centerville School Treasurer Steven Hinshaw is the new finance director for the city of Centerville, according to City Manager Greg Horn.

Hinshaw starts his new position Jan. 2.

Hinshaw, who's been treasurer of the Centerville City School District for the past four years, replaces Mark Schlagheck, who was appointed as Bellbrook's city manager/finance director earlier this year.

Hinshaw announced his resignation as treasurer of the school district today, Dec. 8.

"We are disappointed that Dr. Hinshaw is leaving the school district, especially at this time," Centerville school board president Dr. David Roer said. "We will miss his fiscal leadership in our schools and we wish him only the best," he said.

"I always thought that I would be in our schools for a very long time and I certainly was not looking to leave," Hinshaw said. "The opportunity arose within our own community and I just had to pursue it."

Hinshaw will manage the city's financial systems and investments. He will also have general oversight of its risk management, human resources and information technology operations, according to Kristen Gopman, assistant to the city manager.

Hinshaw has served as the treasurer/chief financial officer for four Ohio schools systems and as an adjunct professor at the University of Dayton and Miami University, where he has taught and lectured on finance, human resources, and public school economics, she said.

Hinshaw obtained his doctoral degree in philosophy in educational leadership from the University of Dayton and has a master of science degree in administration from Central Michigan University and a bachelor of arts degree in economics from Indiana University, Gopman said. He and his wife, Peggy, and their two daughters, live in Centerville.

City Manager Greg Horn said he was pleased Hinshaw expressed an interest in the Centerville position. "Steve is well respected in his field and in our community and will be a tremendous addition to our management team," he said. "We are confident he will maintain the standard of excellence in financial reporting that our city has been consistently recognized for over the years." Both Horn and Hinshaw are members of the Centerville Rotary Club, a local service organization.

The Centerville School Board met Dec. 6 to begin selecting a new treasurer. It plans to continue working on that for the next several weeks.
