Gas prices jump 31 cents
Friday, January 02, 2009
DAYTON — Gas prices in the Dayton area are up a bit from lows reached in December, but they're still much lower than they were a year ago, according to DaytonGasPrices.com.
The Web site indicated the average local price paid for a gallon of unleaded regular stood at $1.81 early Friday morning, up about 31 cents from a week ago. Prices have generally been declining since mid-September when gasolines was around $4 a gallon, and they dipped below $1.50 a few times in December.
At $1.81, local prices currently are above the national average of about $1.63, according to DaytonGasPrices.com. The Dayton area has been below the national average for most of the fall and early winter.
DaytonGasPrices.com bases its tracking of local gasoline prices on voluntary reports from motorists, and it lists the lowest and highest prices spotted in the last 48 hours on the site.
The lowest price reported in the two days leading up to Friday morning was $1.53 at a North Dixie Drive station at noon on Thursday. Six other stations in Dayton and Xenia were selling fuel for $1.55 or $1.56.
At the other end of the spectrum, two stations in Huber Heights were selling at $1.89 Thursday night. Many stations around the area have been selling a gallon of unleaded regular gasoline for $1.85.

I spent xmas holidays in southern California and for the first time in my life, gas prices were the same as here. We can all say thanks to Emro Marketing who continue to rip off the Miami Valley.

When no one has a job to go to anymore, the demand for gas should drop off big time along with the price. Ohio and Michigan have been hit bad on job losses. For the price to rise now just sounds like greed to me.

The pure word is GREED by the so-called oil companies. Speedway does not have a refinery, but is always first to raise the price. Yes they are owned by Marathon which is Owned by U.S. Steel Corp. What is their financial report claims, probably matches ExxonMobil. This past Tuesday gasoline in Missouri could be bought for $1.259 a gallon. Why is Ohio being held HOSTAGE for higher prices. Sppedway raises 15 to 30 cents at a time, but when price does drop alot they only drop a penny or two.

High Speed Rail?? At what Cost. A mile of Rail cost around 60 million, while that same would buy 50 miles of I-75. Crude closed up today at 46&change. It is up over 10 bucks in the past two weeks. WHY?? As for the person who can’t use Marathon gas. Get real YOU Don’t have a clue where the gas came from. Friend drives for a private tanker firm he puts the gas in the tanks at stations. Many days his tanker fills up all station brands, Same gas. I know I’ve been with him at that time.Didn’t matter.

Over one half of American drivers have altered their driving habits since gas went to $4.00/gal per AAA and gasoline dealers associations. That is the reason gas prices are down. Mass transit would help but it is not a cure all. Supply & demand 101.

I lived in the Bay area for years. They have a wonderful mass transit system. What would have taken two hours by car only took one hour by the cal trans system. I didn’t have to put up with the stress of rush hour or have to worry about finding a parking space. I only used my car for big shopping trips such as groceries. If anyone has been out of the country they know that America is in the dark ages when it comes to it’s transportation system.

The commodity market on oil doesnt support this increase at the pump, it should be below 1.50 a gallon.

Karon, Clinton had nothing do with high speed trains on the east coast. These trains have been up and running for years. We will have high gas prices because it is a monopolistic industry. If we skuttled all cars and rode trains their ticket prices would increase whenever the owners or government decided they wanted to raise the prices. THERE IS NO EASY ANSWER TO THE TRANSPORTATION PROBLEM UNLESS WE ALL WALK OR RIDE BIKES, PERIOD.

Stuck In Ohio, did you know California voters in the november election voted for the High speed passenger trains. These trains will be up and running by 2017!

Again, as someone from Southern California, while trains would help Ohio, they would come nowhere near solving things. The train system serving all of SoCal is nice, but hasn’t solved their problems at all. Everyone still commutes and drives places on the weekends. If trains were the answer, LA’s traffic wouldn’t be continuing to get worse.
As for the other, I don’t care if I’m getting gouged at $4 or 4 cents, it’s still gouging!

I promise the people of Ohio trains do work in america! The east coast of the United States is enjoying a high speed passenger train from Washington DC to Boston thanks from the support of Priesdent Clinton! If Ohio is to remain productive for the 21st century these trains are extremely important to have! Support the Ohiohub plan!

Mass Transit is for ignorant Green people. We need to drill more in Alaska and off shore. If we were able to drill you would see a dramatic drop in fuel costs and give you more money to pay your mortgage, car note credit bills and solve these problems before the inflation of these trillion dollar giveaways catch up with you. Hopefully the new administration is willing to do what is right and smart on this. Oil companies make less, the Gov spends less and you have more disposable income.

how does anyone think “mass transportation” in the USA will work? This is not europe, we here live vast distance in comparison to those over the pond. What, drive to parking lot and pay for their services, board a train or bus, commute via “mass t” walk for however long (time) to work ect… Then to return the same way(time) Trains are not the answer for a large percentage of Americans today.

with the exception of a recent vacation, I have to agree with the drive/use less crowd. in a few short weeks we will be searing in a president who did not regret $4-5 gas prices, but regretted that the price went up as fast as it did. this should be a clue for the troubles we are going to be in for the long haul.
where is the money going to come from for these magic trains?

Less usage will cause a glut in the market which will keep prices somewhat low. But its up to all of us to conserve, not just a few. Heck i feel lucky that my Diesel has came down from 4.79 a gallon to roughly 2.39 a gallon. Now my expenses arent as high. To bad when i pass savings to my customers, you arent seeing the difference. But that part of it is out of our control, but we are trying to help. Just know that much. But its all up to you to do the right thing, and show the oil people.

Ohio must consider more mass transit for the 21st century. High speed passenger trains and streetcars for the Ohio cities are a absolutely MUST DO if Ohio is to remain a productive state!

Speedway controls the market in this area because their parent company Marathon (Aka) Asland oil, owns the pipeline down in Lebanon where all the gas companies get their gas from, hense them being the first to raise prices around here. Yes i am tired of their little games they play but just what can you do? Perhaps drive less often. Drive smart-combining trips, and basic cost cutting things such at that. Just because the prices seem reasonable RIGHT now, why shouldnt we just all use less!

just seen on the news about a .10 hike in the gas tax is in the works…which would push it to 1.95, this would eat up any tax cut any of us would get.

Speaking of conditioning… I remember saying to a friend, “A dollar seven nine? I’m not paying a dollar seven nine for gas! That’s insane!”
That wasn’t very long ago.
On 9/11, at lunchtime, I paid $1.419/gallon. I thought that was outrageous. I still do.

Nicole. Think about this for a second, you’ve been conditioned to think that these prices are ok. Now when they get to under $2 you believe this is some sort of gas holiday. Very untrue and if you knew anything about brent sea crude or nymex futures you would know that the prices is not exactly correlating. It also is not correlating with the rbob. The real gas price should be in the range of 1.55 - 1.63 according to my calculations. Yes there is something we can do about this, be informed.

So the magic price point that we can start complaining at is $2.00/gal. Interesting. Well, I guess tomorrow we can complain since $1.85 a daily jump of 20-30 cents will take us over. As for going down 20-30 cents at a time, never seen it. Maybe a dime. This is the accurate complaint that gas outlets are always quick with their increases and they are big. But decreases are slow and small.

This is just the latest in a round of illegal gouging that seems to plague OH. I’ve lived here for 12 years, but recently just returned from four years of college in Southern Cal (just east of the infamous LA, no less) and can safely say that not once in that time did prices jump anywhere near 30 cents in one day. A five cent increase was enough to make me raise my eyebrows and so rare that I remember the two times it happened. If we didn’t have a corrupt AG maybe something would be done.

Will people ever stop complaining? The price of gas is under $2 - shush up!!! Quit complaining. There’s nothing that you can do about it so quit all of the nagging - it’s old! Gas has jumped $.20 for sometime now yet people act SO surprised. But nobody says anything the next day when it drops $.30!! Jeez!!!

This is just another example of price fixing and gouging on the part of franchise gas companies. The price of oil is still down but local stations want to maximize their profits at the expense of hard working Ohioans’. This is when the government should step in and hit them with higher taxes.
The stations are quick to increase with any rise in price of crude oil, but slow in reducing them. Many locals have lost, or are about, to lose their jobs and this is what our neighborhood gas stations do. They always raise prices on Thursday and Holidays to gouge those getting paid on Thur/Fri and live from week to week because of our faltering economy. Send off letter to Senator Brown, he claims to be working for the working man.

“Up a bit?” How about 15% overnight! Wednesday most stations were around $1.65. Thursday thay were at $1.85 or more. I thought some new tax kicked in on 1/1/2009 to cause it to jump so much. Sure these prices are better than the summer of 2008, but what in the world causes prices to jump $.20-$.30 overnight!
