Paintball attacks reported in Miami County
Friday, January 02, 2009
TROY — Vehicles parked along streets and roads across Miami County were hit with orange paint from a paintball gun New Years Day.
Police agencies in Piqua, Troy, Covington and the county were still receiving reports of paint on vehicles Friday afternoon, Jan. 2, according to radio traffic from the countywide dispatch center.
No one has been charged.
In Piqua, Patrolman Rick Byron said police began receiving reports mid-afternoon Thursday of paint on cars parked along at least eight streets.
"A good many (others) did not report it. They were able to wash it off," Byron said.
Covington police received reports of damage to vehicles earlier in the day. Reports also were received by Troy police and the county sheriff's office.
Covington and Troy police officials did not return calls for information Friday.
Sheriff's Capt. Dave Duchak said reports were received from one house on South Dayton-Brandt Road in the southeast area of the county, one at Myers Road and Ohio 41 between Troy and Covington and two in Bradford in the far northwest part of the county.
Duchak said deputies wil step up patrols. He cautioned those firing the paintball guns that they face, at the very least, being charged with misdemeanor criminal mischief. If a person would be hit by a paintball, an assault charge would be possible.
