HUBER HEIGHTS — Some area spaghetti lovers got a free plate of the stuff Saturday, Jan. 10, and a reminder about the most important rule of success - you have to show up.

Mike Urich of Dayton did, arriving at 10 p.m. Friday night to be the first in line this morning for Fazoli's one-day promotion. The first 100 customers got a free small spaghetti. Those in line (and over 18) when the restaurant opened at 10:30 a.m. also got in the drawing for 25 giveaways of free spaghetti weekly for a year.

Urich, retired on disability, said he and his wife enjoy Fazoli's and he wanted his chance at 52 free weeks of it.

"I'm Italian, I was raised on spaghetti," Urich said shortly before 10 a.m. "I've got my fingers crossed."

Cindy Robertson and husband Robbie, of Bethel Twp., were on the same page. The free spaghetti that day was O.K., but they wanted more.

"We want to win that free spaghetti," Mrs. Robertson said.

And Phyllis Waida drove over from Beavercreek because "I just love things like this."

It may have been the icy weather or a lack of general knowledge about the event, announced just two days ago, but when the store opened at 10:30 a.m., there were 25 people over 18 in line.

Twenty-five chances for a year of spaghetti, exactly 25 eligible people who made it in time. What are the odds?

They won it all - one of the 100 free spaghettis and a regular-size spaghetti once a week for the next year. A regular size spaghetti entree, marinara or meat sauce, is $4.79-4.99.

Only three Fazoli's nationally were chosen for the promotion. Huber Heights was the only one in Ohio.

But it's not over yet - Fazoli's plans to give away 2.7 million pounds of spaghetti nationally over the next six weeks. That's over 100,000 miles of noodles, enough to wrap around the earth four times, Dayton Regional Manager Scott Jackson said. "It's a revolution against high prices," Jackson said. "And it being winter, just after Christmas and with all the other things going on right now, it's something people can really use."
