The National Weather Service in Wilmington has extended a wind chill advisory from midnight through 6 p.m. Friday, Jan. 16, as bitter west to northwest winds are expected to combine with frigid air to produce wind chills of 15-25 degrees below zero.

The weather service also said snow is to taper off to scattered snow showers by late tonight, with total accumulations for the day ranging from three to six inches. The heaviest accumulations generally are north of Interstate 70.

Commanders at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base implemented a staggered early departure of non-essential employees this afternoon. Only base-essential personnel are to report for duty this evening.

The staggered departure is designed to enable a safe and orderly departure of base personnel, said Col. Bradley Spacy, 88th Air Base Wing commander.

The area is under a winter storm warning until midnight, and the steady snow caused at least two serious traffic accidents.

Darke, Clark and Champaign counties were under a Level 1 snow emergency. A Level 1 declaration means roads are hazardous and caution should be used if travel is necessary.

About 14 vehicles were involved in a series of accidents on Interstate 75 near Tipp City. One person died, but officials were not sure the death was weather-related.

At about 11:30 a.m., an accident on I-675 left two people trapped, their vehicles on coming to rest on their sides. Medics were called to remove and assist the victims of the accident, just north of the North Fairfield Road interchange, a Fairborn police dispatcher said.

By 12:30 p.m., Dayton International Airport reported five delayed flights. Two others were canceled.

January is almost always the coldest month of the year in the Miami Valley, and there have been January cold snaps in recent memory that put the current wintry chill to shame.

In 1994, temperatures dropped to -25 on Jan. 18 and 19, and in 1977, the mercury plunged to -17 on Jan. 16 and to -21 on Jan. 17.

This week conditions will ease a bit on Saturday, which will be partly sunny with a high near 22. Sunday and Monday will bring highs of 27 and 31 respectively.

I look at the Dayton Daily News Headlines every day. We moved from Miamisburg in 1985 to east TN. Usually, most winters, we only need jackets. This year we had to get out the BIG jackets! It got down to 8 degrees a couple of days ago. The coldest it usually gets is in the 20’s or teens, but not every year. This year is unusual. I’m glad to be here and away from all the slush and gray skies of OH. We have more green here in winter months than OH, too. Miss family and friends though. :(

Checking in on my hometown. Moved out here to COLORado several years ago. The big difference (aside from the breathtakingly beautiful Rocky Mountains and very progressive thinking) between here and Dayton is that out here, people actually know how to drive in the snow. In Dayton everybody freaks out and drives 2 MPH and still wrecks. Dayton gets 1” of snow and it’s mass hysteria general panic! Hahahaha!

Let’s see, I just checked and it’s 80 degrees here in Torrance, CA. I sure do miss Springfield and the sounds of an ice scraper, tires spinning and the furnace coming on every three minutes. I’m just glad I remembered to wear a short sleeved shirt this morning. Don’t worry, Spring is only about ten to twelve weeks away.

The snow is wonderful looking out my window here at work. If I didnt have to worry about all the people who do not know how to drive in snow I would never worry about driving home. But there are all those who do not slow down and with the city not putting much salt down anymore—disaster waiting to happen. Oh well such it is living here in Ohio

I now live in the desert in CA, we got between 13 & 18 inches the week before Christmas. We don’t get much snow here but we do we all appreciate it, people get friendly, and help each other out. Most CA people don’t know how to drive in the snow but all you OH people should, slow down, leave space beween you and car in front of you, slow down before you have to stop and watch your take offs. Be award of what is going around you at all times. Parents teach you kids how to drive in show.

I’m sure some people are secretly glad that they might be able to trump up an excuse to go home from work early, as long as they can afford to do so. I’m not. It was slick this morning and what little I can see out of my office window is covered with snow, but I’ve driven in worse. Much worse. Although I think we could all use a few weeks up in Minnesota during winter to test our true mettle and get a little perspective! And go ice fishing.

I’ve never seen so many people upset with weather reporting. No one is saying that snow is unusual—-they are just reporting it. Also——clouds are unpredictable. Sometimes they call for snow——and it does not snow. meteorologists are not omniscient. Why so snarky?

By Ohio the heart of it all!

It’s Ohio. It’s winter. It’s snow. Not the end of the world people.

Break out the sleds and let’s hit Suicide Hill. Nothing better than hot chocolate and whiskey on the Hill!

You don’t like it? Move.

Yes, beautiful Ohio. this is a such a wonderful change from endless sunny days and heat of Arizona to 4 actual seasons. Friends in Arizona said “why” are you moving to Ohio? Well…. Rattlesnakes, Scorpions, and 360 days of endless sun, that should be enough. This is Jan folks, the winter is beautiful. Just enjoy the beauty of winter, soon spring will be here.ahh the 4 season., gotta love it.

I live north west of Springfield in Champaign County and we have about 6” and is still coming down hard. Looking at area weather maps I would expect several more inches before it stops. Haven’t seen a snow plow in our plat yet today so they must be working on local roads. They usually do a fine job of clearing roads, although I haven’t seen any salt this year, just sand.

Hey, I was born and raised in Pensacola Florida and so was my family and it’s just absolutely amazing there in the summer. Heat and bugs? Yep, sounds like the south! Snow and cold? Sounds like Ohio. You take what you get for each area, I suppose. Man, I miss that beach. And no I can’t possibly give you a good reason for why I traded THAT for THIS. Chalk it up to being a Marine wife. Comes with the job description!

I’m sure the local news will be breaking into TV coverage today to say that there are a few inches on the ground. I’m sure they’ll also get a policeman to state the obvious that when there is snow on the ground that you should slower and leave more distance between another car. And I’m sure they’ll have reporters all over telling us that it’s snowing outside and that it’s cold and that we should wear coats, hats, and gloves.
Don’t know how we would ever survive without them!!!

It still doesn’t seem to be accumulating in the grass all that much, for all it appears to have snowed here in Dayton. The parking lots are getting covered and a bit slippery.

It’s snowing here in West Milton. Have about 1 1/2 inch now. Hope to get the 4 inchs they say we can get. Lived 15 years in Florida, and had to come home to Ohio. The heat and bugs in Florida, they can have. I love the snow, and the changes of seasons. Been hearing we’d have snow for months, and didn’t get nothing. I love this weather, thank you Father for Ohio….

Rediculous. We live in Ohio. Ohio gets snow. The weathermen are all acting as if this is an unusual occurence. Imagine. Snow in January in Ohio. Shocking. The next ‘shocking weather’ will be Sun in Florida.

In West Palm Beach, Florida, we are having a severe cold front moving through - it’s only supposed to get up to about 60 today and into the mid forties tonight. Thank Goodness we don’t have a frost warning. This is for all my relative still living in the “nawth”.
