Ohio jobless rate hits highest mark in 22 years

By William Hershey

Staff Writer

Friday, January 23, 2009

COLUMBUS — In another sign of the slumping economy, Ohio's unemployment rate jumped to 7.8 percent in December, the highest monthly rate in more than 22 years, according to data released Friday, Jan. 23, by the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services.

"Job losses accelerated in December," Douglas Lumpkin, ODJFS director, said in a press release. "The unemployment rate rose to 7.8 percent as job losses increased in both the goods-producing and service-providing industries."

The rate jumped half a percentage point from the 7.3 jobless rate in November. It was the highest monthly rate since 7.9 percent in December 1986.

Economist Edward Hill, vice president of economic development at Cleveland State University, said a rebound in employment is tied to credit markets' recovery, which he thinks could happen by March.

"The labor markets will start recovering about 18 months after the credit markets start moving," Hill said.

December was the sixth straight month that Ohio's unemployment rate has been above 7 percent. The national unemployment rate in December was 7.2 percent, up from 6.8 percent in November.

In Ohio, the number of unemployed workers increased to 465,000 in December, up from 435,000 in November.

In the past 12 months, the number of unemployed has gone up by 118,000 from 347,000.

The unemployment rate in December 2007 was 5.8 percent.

In December, nonagricultural wage and salary employment in the state dropped by 33,400, from 5,363,100 in November to 5,329,700 in December.

The rising unemployment rate comes with the state faces a potential budget shortfall of more than $7 billion in the next two-year budget cycle which begins July 1. Gov. Ted Strickland on Wednesday, Jan. 28, is expected to outline some of his proposals for dealing with the shortfall in his State of the State speech.

For those of you with recent college loans you are needing to pay off. Have you thought about the army/air force/navy guard? They will not only pay back your loans with repayment program, but also will give you a bonus of 10 to 20,000 dollars.

It’s not a bad gig. You’d be helping your country, and making decent money. It’s a job.

The younger folks out there: If you can’t find a job, you’re not searching indepth.

The older folks, my heart goes out to you.

I am a career counselor in Chicago & have helped several clients dress down thier resumes to fit the positions that r out there and even have had several put 2gether personal services contracts to help give confidence to employers that they will work for them for at least a minimum # of yrs before leaving. The management level and higher pay positions just are not there & job seekers have to understand that obtaining a position that pay near what you have been used to earning may not be available

If u have been hit by the recent downsizing this may be a great time to consider relocating for work or going back to school to reeducate yourself for a new career. The honest truth is that it is also time to lower expectations & if u have applied/interviewed several places & nothing has developed then maybe your asking for 2 much or it appears so on you resume. Many companies steer away from people they think are over qualified because they fear this person is only using them for a temporary fix.

To Jon, about bringing in casinos to help the economy: with everyone losing their job, where is the money that people would be spending in these casinos supposed to come from?

I have been looking for full time work since graduating from college. There has only been part time work. Now in July even that might be gone. Utility bills are up, clothes, food, and shelter…Don’t know how they keep saying this is a recession. It seems like a depression to me. Even in the Great Depression there were people that still went out to eat and had “things”, but then there are the rest of us. This is not a democratic/republican thing, it is watching our jobs get outsourced for years.

Too late. 1st week of October2008 the small co. I worked for laid us off “temporarily” then the next week sent letters in the mail saying the layoff was permanent. Was by the place last week, they are still shut down. I have been ptting in applications all over since then, and brother, places are not hiring. So if you have a job, you better work your a$$ of to keep it, and if you lose your job, welcome to the bread line.

I see a lot of people saying they will not lose their job because they give 120%. Well, hopefully you don’t wake up and find out thats not enough. I work hard also, always early and stay late, productive as possible. The sad truth is my company is a Global company and sales are in the tank. When that happens, something has to give and everyone that is let go is lazy. Each department have to trim so many employees and good ones do get termainated. Obama is not the savior. He can only do so much.

Nobody should be secure in not losing their job. When a hospital(Fransican) or a jail(Dayton Human Rehabilitation Center)can close and you still have sick people and criminals anything can happen.

Listen to all the whining going on here and this is just poor pitiful dayton newspaper just think about the whole country whining. Americans need to put on the panties and deal with it. I give my job 120% and why because i have a job and i am very proud to have one and that is why i haven’t lost my job. Americans expects the government to take care of us but that is not what the government is for. And now Obama wants us to pay for abortions outside this country and more coming

This all happened on Strickland’s watch so it’s his fault and by proxy, B. Hussain Obuma’s fault. So it’s time to begin work to get them out of office.

If you’re out of work, there are plenty of job openings in other areas (for now) if you’ll relocated say out to the Plains states where unemployment is only half what it is here in Ohio. It’s an excellent time to perhaps learn some new skills and go back to school - little wonder enrollment at area colleges and universities is climbing so fast. Folks forget we had national unemployment rates about 3% points higher than this in the late 70’s and early 80’s, along with hyperinflation. Remember??

To the “thereishope” Faith in God is cool. But, one must also do some leg work and apply themselves. Either through education or job training and searches. God works but, does not expect his followers to just sit on their butts and expect a miracle. Only cults do that.

I’ve read all the posts, and see that we all have one common need. I ask you these questions: What are you putting your trust in? Is it self, based on your education or employer? Is it our government? Is it corporate America business owners? Do you or any of these really hold your future? Are you guaranteed tommorrow? Who then? Our choice in this matter will influence our todays, and our eternity. I choose my creator and saviour Jesus Christ! HE will never leave you nor forsake you.

Anyone could lose their job. Fact of it is, if one wants to secure employment after a job loss in Dayton, the best bet is to look elsewhere. If my job ended, I would be searching every state. The only problem would be selling the house.

And about these layoffs. Have you noticed that our great BIG American corporations, the global ones, are laying off in America and laying off Americans. They are not sending home any foreign workers, they are keeping their jobs. They are not laying off employees in other countries. No they are laying off Americans!

Think about it. Buy only made in America. Buy only from companies that don’t ship our jobs overseas. Quit supporting the traitors.

There are other industries are also working on increasing labor VISAS. They say there are no Americans to do construction, landscaping, hospitality. LIES LIES LIES. The restaurant industry says there are a shortage of American waiters and waitresses, busboys, dishwashers and even cooks. According to the industries there are no Americans to hire. Yet the media keeps telling millions of Americans have lost their jobs.

By Patty

January 23, 2009 2:41 PM | Link to this

Call your Congressman tell them to freeze worker VISAS. While we need jobs they are still giving out 140,000 VISAS a month! Harry Reid wants to increase VISAS! Corporations are saying there are no Americans to fill the jobs. If you think it does not hurt you - H1B VISAS: A specialty occupation requires theoretical and practical application of a body of specialized knowledge along with at least a bachelor’s degree or its equivalent. For example, architecture, engineering, mathematics, physical sciences, social sciences, medicine and health, education, business specialties, accounting, law, theology, and the arts are specialty occupations.

Ohio is losing more jobs then ever, yet people still support Strickland. Please, pretty please, in two years do not re-elect an incompetent governor. I understood at the time why some of you voted the way you did, but please, lets all do our homework this time. Hopefully in the next cycle of elections your vote will not simply be checking the democrat box. After the poor excuse of what the Republicans did, it was understandable why votes were made, but I hope now that you see that several incompetent people were elected and our state is dearly paying the price. Not necessarily saying just vote republican next time, but I am imploring you to do actual research this time. If we are not careful, our state will continue to lose more and more jobs, people, and talent.

Let Hewlett-Packard give there ceo 42.5 million dollars in bonus money for what laying off nearly 25 million employees, and that is the reason why are system is so messed up, practically its everybody fault in the government from the feds all the way to the state of Ohio. Really are nothing but a bunch of crooks, you think Obama is going to make it any better, I think not you people voted him in with even doing a ounce of research before voting him in. You voted him in because he was popular.

Chris I got a job and in the past few months I have declined several other lucrative & unsolicited offers to change employers - however I am perfectly happy growing at my current employer. Maybe it is my willingness to give back to my employer as much as they give to me that provides the job secruity that I have.My firm has experienced the same downsizing as everywhere else I have fortunately avoided the cuts and have experienced several promotions over the past 2 years.Maybe your the idiot.lol

Times are tough it is that simple. It is up to the individual worker to make themselve valuable to a firm-we need to stop blaming others for our choice not to stay educated-motivated-etc.I have empathy for anyone who lose their job however I refuse to feel sorry when the truth is very few people make themselves a valuable asset to a firm.Instead they do the exact opposite and expect the firm to provide everything to them.It is a give and take environment and not many employees truly give back.

I never worry about my position. I follow a personal philosophy where I continue to educate myself through workshops and classes (out of my pocket if needed) to keep up to date in the industry. I make myself as valuable as possible to the organization and as a result I have been able avoid a lot of downsizing in the firm by being offered other positions in other areas. If I do lose my job I know I well qualified to go elsewhere to earn a living.

These times are some of the hardest this generation will ever see and it will be a character builder. It only points out that those who are survivors understand all to well the meaning of living within their means and not squandering their opportunities. For those who have lost their work, keep your hope alive and keep trying, this will pass too. For those who blame the government for all their woes, they are simply living a world shaped by non-reality. It is time to get a grip and get real!

Our co is always looking for talent- people want $ and prestige but do not want to do what is right for the company. Companies must make money to survive- not pay out all its profits to overpaid execs and employees who choose not to work, but still think they are entitled to a paycheck. What happened to taking pride in a job welll done? What happened to working hard = success?

ALL JOKES ASIDE, we ALL need to pray for OUR country and leaders and put our TRUST in GOD. Obama may be a very good start but JESUS is the TRUE answer. And for those who don’t believe in JESUS just try him, what do you have to lose? 1st you must know that you are a sinner and ask for forgivness 2nd find a good BIBLE teaching church. 3rd Believe and trust that he will (Jesus)be your bridge to THE ALMIGHTY GOD! Nobody is perfect but Jesus. So being a “good person” doesn’t cut it. Choose JESUS.
