DAYTON — Luck was with Ed Williams on Friday the 13th, 2004.

Williams suffered a heart attack at age 47 while working at Systemax Manufacturing in Fletcher. He collapsed to the floor, stopped breathing and had no pulse.

Bruce Willcox, Systemax director of administration and a former assistant fire chief in Piqua, revived Williams using a defibrillator.

"I went into cardiac arrest," said Williams of Urbana. "The next thing I knew, I'm dead on the floor. All at once I woke up. Here these guys had me back alive again."

Williams considers himself "the luckiest man alive." Had he not been at work, where there was a defibrillator, "I would have been gone forever," he said.

Friday the 13th is considered to be an unlucky day. The superstition has roots in both Christian and pagan culture.

Friday, Feb. 13, is the first of three such events this year. The 13th also will fall on a Friday in March and November.

Juan J. Abreu of Bellbrook had misgivings about his wife giving birth to their son, Isaac, by induced labor on June 13, 2001.

"I was resistant to her doing that because of my superstition," Abreu said. "But she wanted that doctor to be the one to deliver and that was the only day he could do it. They overruled me there."

Had the birth been on a Friday the 13th, "I really would have had a major issue with it," Abreu said.

Paula Dillon of Vandalia was born on a Friday the 13th. She considers it to be her lucky day.

"Although nothing really spectacularly 'lucky' has happened on that day, nothing bad has happened either," Dillon said.

Dillon's husband was born on April Fool's Day. "Everybody gets a chuckle out of it," she said. "We make a good team."

Chris Gray will have the Grand Opening ribbon cutting of his new Figaro's Pizza restaurant in Kettering on Friday, Feb. 13. "I make my own luck," Gray said.

Gamblers are a superstitious lot, said Jeff Michie, assistant general manager at Belterra Casino Resort & Spa in Belterra, Ind. "A lot of people come out to the casino on Friday the 13th, actually — a day which supposedly brings bad luck," Michie said.

People may visit the casino on Friday the 13th because they think other people will stay away. Then again, it could be Belterra's "Lucky Friday the 13th" promotion giving away $13,000 in cash prizes. "We are actually expecting quite a crowd," Michie said.

I don’t care for Friday the 13th - only cause my older brother (when we were kids) used to watch that movie all the time and scare the crap out of me! But this Friday the 13th isn’t so bad - got paid and my taxes were direct deposited in my account this morning! :)

Carol: Please stop posting comments until you learn how to spell….. and I graduated from Sinclair and you’re embarrassing me with your education! You’re not going to be making tons of money if you can’t spell the word SPELL!

I don’t know why I read these postings sometimes…so few who post on DDN can lighten up. Friday the 13th and all the superstition around it is just plain fun and lightheartedness. Why all of the doom and gloom like “if it weren’t for bad luck, I’d have no luck at all.” If you carry around a bad attitude, no one wants to be around you anyway. I love the stories about folks being married or born or have something extraordinary happy on the 13th or at any time.

No way. Friday the 13th was the day my wonderful father was brought into the world. How could an unlucky day bring my family one of life’s greatest gifts?

Any day can be unlucky - you don’t need a specific number to cause it. Friday the 13th has always been a good day for me. Besides being payday here too, just the fact that my husband & I have jobs ups our luck factor! As for today, it’s my birthday & without asking, I got the day off of work! Besides a night out with friends (hopefully at the Dublin Pub to see Mother Grove), I’ll play the Mega Millions with the hopes of walking away with the $30+ mil one would get after a lump sum & taxes.

My son was born on Friday the 13th after a rough pregnancy and delivery. I’ll never forget my doctor, in an effort to lighten the mood, looking up at me and saying, “It’s a boy; let’s name him Jason!” We didn’t.

Oh, please! SUPERSTITION! Go step on a crack and break your mothers back! Maybe walk under a ladder, or have a black cat cross your path, you weak-minded simpletons! Just proves again that Darwin was correct! Go ask Obama for help - I’m SURE he’ll turn the USA into paradise. Not so much yet…

Karma. Another day, another date of time. Maybe it’s not all numberology. Good things happen on bad days. So maybe it isn’t the date.

One grammaticle error verses 10 mispelled words…. ( and I used spell check - go figure ) I can live with that average.

Michael- There’s no need for rude comments. Especially if you’re also going to make grammatical errors (i.e. you’re vs. your).

I hope tomorrow goes smoothly for all. :)

Carol Showers what kind of hilljack are you? Have you ever heard of spell check? Or is that above your 5th grade education? It’s no wonder Dayton is failing on numerous fronts. I certainly hope your taking a spelling class, if not your wasting your money.
