TROY — A Bellefontaine man accused of tackling a Fletcher village policeman following a February traffic stop pleaded guilty Monday, March 16, to felony assault in a Miami County court.

Jerome C. Hicks, 29, was accused of tackling Sgt. Kenneth G. Lohnes as he attempted to take him into custody after stopping Hicks on U.S. 36 in the village for allegedly driving 80 mph around 9:30 p.m. Feb. 12.

Lohnes said in his report that Hicks had been drinking and driving under suspension. He said the two fell to the ground and scuffled before he was able to use pepper spray to control Hicks.

Hicks waived a grand jury's consideration of the allegations and pleaded to the fourth-degree felony charge as a part of a deal in which prosecutors dismissed several misdemeanor charges filed in the municipal court, public defender Steve Layman said.

Hicks faces up to 18 months in prison at sentencing April 27 in Miami County Common Pleas Court. He is free on a recognizance bond.
