The South Dayton Knights, a feeder program for Alter boys basketball, will send a pipeline of talent to Joe Petrocelli's high school team for at least the next few years.

The seventh- and eighth-grade teams combined for an impressive 28-3 overall record heading into two season-ending tournaments.

Extras

The seventh-graders, coached by former University of Dayton player Dan Christie, posted a 14-1 record with a buzzer beater providing the only blemish.

The eighth-graders, guided by coaches Kevin Kavanaugh and Jim Long, finished 14-2 in league play and grabbed a second place finish in a Holiday tournament at Kingdom Sports Center.

The Knights play Greater Catholic League schools such as Chaminade-Julienne, Middletown Fenwick and Carroll, and then fill out their schedule with other independent schools or Greater Western Ohio Conference schools.

The South Dayton Knights basketball club consists of more than 100 boys participating in grades three through eight.

Women's 35-and-older softball offered

A women's 35-and-over softball league will be formed in Kettering if there is enough interest.

"Most of my teammates have played softball in Kettering since 1972 and would like to continue," said Pam Brown Weirauch, who is helping spearhead the effort. "The time has come to move on to a somewhat slower, more relaxed game. Men have had 35-plus, 50-plus for many years."

Anyone interested in playing can reach Weirauch at (937) 252-1902 or the Kettering Parks and Recreation Department at (937) 296-2486.

Kettering Fairmont freshman Chris Denlinger became the third Firebird wrestler ever to win an individual title at the prestigious Centerville Buckeye Classic. He highlighted Fairmont's 11th-place finish out of 37 freshmen teams from across the state.

Myles Peck also earned a spot in the finals and Nathan Wheeler placed fifth. Also winning matches were Derek Short, Gary Leonard, Ty Dorman, and Kyle Chambers.

Oakwood wrestler wins

Oakwood's Buck Powell captured the 116-pound title at the Southwestern Buckeye League Middle School Championships held Feb. 2. Powell posted a 15-3 major decision over Brookville's Cody Steck.

Thomas Bustillo (92), Cameron Wedding (150) and Sam Stanley (172) all claimed third-place finishes for the Lumberjacks, who placed seventh out of 14 teams.
