Miamisburg finalizes riverfront park plans

MIAMISBURG — Miamisburg City Council on July 1 heard the final plans for a downtown, 10.2-acre riverfront park with construction to start next year.

City officials hope the estimated $17 million project continues the boost in downtown development and public recreational access to the Great Miami River.

"It really complements what also is being done privately on Main Street," said Mayor Richard Church. "With the money we're seeing being put into the buildings downtown, they both complement each other, tremendously."

The park will be constructed along the river between Linden Avenue and Ferry Street. It would involve realigning the levee wall and bike path; construction of an outdoor stage, community meeting space, interactive water feature, concessions, restrooms and a canoe and kayak rental business, and possibly installing an outdoor ice rink.

The city used $1.8 million in Clean Ohio Funds to purchase 36 of 39 properties needed for the park and hopes to get another grant to buy the final three properties. None of the $17 million needed to build the project is in hand and a fund-raising effort will be needed to raise a combination of public, private and corporate funds, city officials said.

If funding can be obtained, the project would be phased-in over 10 years, five, if more funding becomes available, officials said.

"This project is on the radar with state, federal and local community agencies," said city manager Bill Nelson.

The first phase is estimated at $3.8 million and involves constructing a new street, removing the old Miami Avenue and "greening" the area.

Council will vote Aug. 5 on the final plan.
