New staff welcomes students of Twin Valley

WEST ALEXANDRIA — Opening day at Twin Valley Community School, West Alexandria, meant different things to the students.

At the elementary school, some are excited with smiling faces. Some come in doors hesitant, wondering what to expect. Most are happy to be back with their friends.

No one unexpected to see a happy, small dog, named Sport, in the arms of Lisa Fugate, mother of fifth grade fraternal twins, Morgan and Hunter Newhart.

The two-year-old, Schnauzer, terrier mix, hitched a ride in their Hummer as they left for school on Aug. 20.

"We were leaving for school and he jumped in the Hummer," said Lisa Fugate. "I couldn't get him out and we had to get going, so we had to take him with us. He rides 4-wheelers and rides in the car. He goes everywhere we go. He likes to be with you wherever you go. He sleeps with Morgan, and he jumps on the 4-wheeler and rides the 4-wheeler with her."

She said her daughter, Morgan, had a cat and it was hit by a car. Fugate's friend didn't want Sport since she had three other dogs.

"We fell in love with him. He is so cute. We took him and kept him."

Principal Patti Precht said this year starts with five new teachers: Julie Schulze, Chris McClellan, Andrew Huddleston, Amanda Wackerman, and Jessica Bayless. In grades three through five, teachers team in pairs and share students.

"Last year TVS Elementary had an enrollment of 430 students and this year enrollment is up with a total of approximately 480 students," said Precht. "This number is changing every day. Kindergarten enrollment is about 20 percent higher with 80 students."

Twin Valley Superintendent Vernon Rosenbeck, said, "We are excited about being back and hope the students of Twin Valley Community Schools receive the best education possible and enjoy the school year."

For the 2007-08 school year the PTO raised a little more than $14,000.

"The purchase of technology, Twin Valley counseling program, purchasing books for the library, providing quarterly family fun nights, and field day were a few items and activities the PTO paid," he said. "Already this year the PTO has given each new teacher $200 to purchase supplies for their classroom."

Eva Howard is the middle school principal and Scott Cottingim is the high school principal.
