DENVER — For Ohio Democrats, the 2004 convention in Boston seems like a lifetime ago.

The most prominent Buckeye there was former U.S. Sen. John Glenn, then 83. This time around Democrats have new star power: Gov. Ted Strickland, U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown and other statewide officeholders.

Strickland was even mentioned as a possible running mate — not just for Hillary Clinton, whom he supported during the primaries, but for Barack Obama, whom he did not.

Ohio Democrats have emerged from the political wilderness, but Republicans aren't convinced it will translate into an Obama victory.

"I think the Democrats ought to continue to be overly optimistic about everything that happens this fall," said Ohio Republican Chairman Bob Bennett. "We'll continue to do our job and the voters will decide on Election Day."
