Strickland: Taxpayer info also on stolen computer tape
Wednesday, June 20, 2007
COLUMBUS — Gov. Ted Strickland announced Wednesday that up to 225,000 taxpayers' personal information was also on the computer data tape that was recently stolen from a part-time intern's car.
So far, information on nearly 500,000 Ohioans is confirmed to be on the stolen device.
Extras
Strickland disclosed Wednesday that the data tape included:
— up to 225,000 names and Social Security numbers of Ohioans with uncashed tax refund checks issued in 2005, 2006 and through May 29, 2007.
— 602 Ohio Lottery winners who have not cashed their checks
— 2,488 Ohioans with uncashed checks of unclaimed funds
— names and bank account numbers for 650 to 1,000 electronic fund transfer transactions that were rejected.
The Strickland administration said again that it's unlikely someone can access the data without special knowledge and equipment. Nonetheless, the state will offer a year of identity theft protection services through Debix to those affected.
Previously, state officials announced the data tape included:
— Names and Social Security numbers of 64,467 state employees
— Names, addresses, phone numbers and Social Security numbers of 53,797 participants in the state pharmacy benefit program and their 75,532 dependents
— Medicaid providers
— Local government bank account information
— Data on school districts, state employees, and vendors who have funds transferred electronically to their bank accounts
— Names and case numbers of Ohioans receiving Temporary Assistance for Needy Families who have uncashed payments from Feb. 1 through May 25.
— Vendor names and federal tax identification numbers for those that receive payroll deduction payments from state employees.
The tape was stolen from an intern's car in his Hilliard apartment complex. A 2001 policy called for taking a copy of the daily data back up home each night by the network administrator. In this instance, the intern was tapped to take it home.
It's been an expensive car break-in. The Controlling Board this week approved $630,533 to contract with Debix Inc. of Austin, Texas, for identity theft protection services for state employees for one year and $100,000 for two contracts with Columbus-based Interhack for analysis and security review.
