Agreement extends unemployment benefits for 13 weeks
Wednesday, July 02, 2008
COLUMBUS — As many as 280,000 Ohioans could qualify for an extra 13 weeks of unemployment compensation benefits under an agreement between the state and the U.S. Department of Labor.
"The weakening national economy and high cost of oil continue to hit Ohio's economy particularly hard," Gov. Ted Strickland said in a press release on Tuesday, July 2. "By extending unemployment benefits to Ohioans we have an opportunity to provide short-term assistance as we continue to invest and plan for our state's economic future."
Under legislation passed by Congress and signed by President Bush, workers who qualified for a new unemployment claim on or after May 5, 2007, could be eligible for the additional 13 weeks of benefits, a press release said.
Eligibility criteria for the additional weeks are the same as for the initial 26 weeks of benefits, the release said.
Within the next several weeks, the Ohio Department of Job and Family services will mail notices to those who might be eligible. Information can be found at http://unemployment.ohio.gov or by calling 1-877-644-6562.
Regular unemployment benefits are paid through employer taxes but the federal government will pay for the extended benefits.
