Another Shell station to add craft beer taps, growler-refill station

The success of the craft-beer taps and growler-refill system at the Town & Country Shell station is about to spread.

The Washington Square Shell station and convenience store two miles south of the Kettering location has applied for the necessary state license to add craft beer taps and a growler-refill station and has already begun remodeling to accommodate the new offering, store owner Mona Olich told this news outlet.

There is no target date yet for the opening of the taps, but the store is gearing up for the addition, Olich said.

The store owner said she saw the success that the 15-tap system at her father’s and brother-in-law’s Shell station at Far Hills Avenue and Stroop Road in Kettering and believes it will be a good fit for her store on Ohio 48, at Far Hills Avenue and Whipp Road in front of the Washington Square Shopping Center.

“I’m really excited,” Olich said. “They’re doing really well with it (at the Kettering store), and the growth in popularity of craft beers isn’t showing any signs of slowing down.”

The Washington Twp. Shell will carry beers from Dayton-area breweries, other Ohio breweries, and craft breweries from other regions.

“I also like the fact that this will contribute to other local and Ohio small businesses,” Olich said. “Some people think of us as just a Shell station, but we are a local small business, too.”

The craft-beer tap system the store will install removes oxygen from the beer container — usually a 64-ounce “growler” or a 32-ounce “howler” — extending the beer’s shelf life for the customer, Olich said.

The Shell station will become the second business in the Washington Square retail center to offer craft beer on tap. Dorothy Lane Market offers eight craft beers on tap at its grocery store a few hundred feet from the Shell station.
