Area schools’ graduation rates remain high

The highest grades for area schools on the state report card came in the graduation rate category, with 29 of 45 districts earning A’s.

Only 25 school districts in the state scored 100 percent on their four-year graduation rate, but nine of those were small districts just northwest of Dayton — Covington, Versailles, Ansonia, Arcanum, Minster, Marion Local, Coldwater, Botkins and Fort Loramie. Yellow Springs also hit 100 percent in that category.

The four-year graduation rate on this report card measured those students who entered ninth grade on track to graduate as the class of 2015. Those students, as well as the classes of 2016 and 2017, have graduated based on passing the Ohio Graduation Test, not the harder new Common Core-tied tests.

The statewide four-year graduation rate for that group was 83 percent, and 40 of 45 area districts exceeded that mark. The five districts below that bar were Mad River and Trotwood (82 percent), Northridge and Jefferson Twp. (77 percent), and Dayton (75 percent).

Dayton had the lowest graduation rate in the area, but there was still some good news there, as the number rose from 72 percent to 75 percent. That put DPS ahead of Columbus, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Akron and Toledo.

Among larger and midsize suburban districts, Springboro, Beavercreek, Miamisburg and Northmont all exceeded 96 percent in the four-year graduation rate.
