UPDATE @ 9:51 p.m.: More storms in the area have left more than 3,900 DP&L customers without electric service, according to the utility’s online outage map.

The most recent check made just minutes ago show as many as 1,150 out of service in Greene County and an estimated 2,733 as far east as Fayette County.  In Montgomery County, the outage number is 18.

UPDATE @ 5:55 p.m.: The lightning strike caused a small fire in the attic on Pepper Drive, a Huber Heights firefighter said.

A ruptured water pipe -- not associated with the lightning strike -- caused further damage elsewhere in the residence, the firefighter said.

The one person in the home at the time called the fire department. No injuries were reported.

Electric service has been cut off and a DP&L crew is on scene.

DP&L spokesman Rob Beeler said crews are dealing with numerous calls throughout the area, especially in Montgomery, Miami and Clinton counties.

"Keep DP&L informed," Beeler said. "If your power is off or even if it's back on. Also, be careful out there because auto accidents are a main cause of power outages in weather like this."

At 6 p.m., the DP&L online outage map shows 144 reported outages in Clinton, 116 in Miami, 31 in Montgomery, 29 in Greene and 3 in Preble.

FIRST REPORT

Lightning is said to have struck a house in Huber Heights and more than 1,000 DP&L customers are without service in two counties as heavy rain and thunderstorms make their way through the Miami Valley.

Fire crews were dispatched to the 5200 block of Pepper Pike about 4:45 p.m. on the report of a lightning strike. All of the occupants evacuated the home safely. The fire crew has placed a blue tarp on the section of the roof where damage has occurred.

About 5:30 p.m., the DP&L online outage map was showing 961 without service in Montgomery and 117 out in Miami County.
