Some Miami Valley retailers are gearing up to take full advantage of the Summer Olympics that begin later this month in London. Other business owners, however, are bracing for the Olympics’ impact on their bottom line.
British-themed businesses and sports bars are among those retailers eagerly anticipating the start of the summer games. Opening ceremonies will be July 27, and the games end 16 days later.
“If you can’t go to London, we’ll bring London to you,” said Nancy Parrott, spokeswoman for The Pub, the British-themed sports bar and tavern at The Greene in Beavercreek.
The Pub’s will offer an “Olympic Beer Sampler,” consisting of beers “from your favorite countries,” or a “Team USA Beer Bucket” consisting of five Budweiser or Bud Lights. “World Team Buckets” or four imported beers will be available, as will an “Olympic Torch Cocktail” whose ingredients are still being worked out.”
“We’ve had success with events such as the royal wedding, the Queen’s Grand Jubilee and World Cup soccer,” Parrott said. “We think the Olympics are going to be something that people are going to want to watch together. People don’t want to be sitting at home and watching — they want to cheer on Team USA with others.”
Mike Morgan, who owns Central Perc coffee shop and restaurant in Oakwood along with his wife and fellow British ex-pat Rose, said he’ll offer some specials, including a Summer Olympic Pudding that went over quite well during the run-up to the royal wedding.
Wise Choice — which offers British food, candies and gifts in Huber Heights — has in stock a 2012 London Olympics commemorative mug, although other commemorative items are difficult to obtain because of Olympic-sized licensing fees and agreements, according to Wise Choice owner Harry Caswell.
Still, Caswell expects his store to benefit from the heightened interest in all things British that the Olympics will generate. “We’ll play it to the hilt,” he said.
He’ll be joined by the Corwin Peddler in Corwin near Waynesville, which sent out a notice last week inviting customers to “get ready for the Olympics by taking a trip to England in one afternoon” to its restaurant, ice cream parlor and tea room. The Corwin Peddler is celebrating “the summer of England” and offering customers a menu that includes Afternoon Tea, Cream Tea, Steak and Ale Pie, Cottage Pie, and Bangers and Mash.
And Terence Ronald, co-owner of Basically British Tea Room and Gift Shop just east of downtown Dayton, said the tea room will offer something with an Olympics theme on its menu.
The Olympics may have a mixed impact on the Dayton area’s bars and restaurants. Shanon Morgan, president of the Miami Valley Restaurant Association, said she expects sports bars to see an increase in business during the Olympics. Fine-dining restaurants, however, will probably see no difference at all, Morgan said.
But Amy Haverstick, owner of Jay’s Restaurant, expects her business will take a hit during the two weeks of televised sporting events. “We are typically a lot slower during the Olympics, summer or winter,” Haverstick said. “A lot of people are at home watching the events, or they go to sports bars.”
Bill DeFries, owner of Beef O’Brady’s Beavercreek location, said his sports pub sees about an 8 percent increase in business during international sporting events such as the Olympics and World Cup soccer. The increase comes from customers who tend to stay longer to watch the sporting events to the end, and from group visits from local swim clubs and track teams.
“I’m sure we’ll get plenty of requests for our party room,” DeFries said.
