California defense firm opens new local office

By Thomas Gnau

Cubic Defense Applications, the defense systems business of Cubic Corp., has opened an office in Beavercreek “to pursue new training and tactical communications business at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base,” the company said Monday.

Cubic recently received a two-year contract to deliver live training services at the National Center for Medical Readiness, also called “Calamityville.” Instruments supplied by Cubic will strengthen the ability to track personnel and vehicles during live training exercises, the company said in a statement.

Cubic is providing the new equipment with the Alliance for Human Effectiveness and Advancement (AHEAD), an industry consortium led by the Wright State University Research Institute, the company said.

“Cubic’s investment and presence in the Dayton region will further strengthen the position of the state of Ohio as a center of human performance research supporting the Human Performance Wing at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base,” Aaron Miller, AHEAD director, said in Cubic’s announcement.

“Right now, we have three employees working out of the office, but we’re counting on growing,” said Jan Stevens, a Cubic spokeswoman. The office is co-located with the WSU Research Institute at 4035 Colonel Glenn Hwy.

In fiscal year 2011, the company had about 7,800 employees worldwide in more than 130 locations. The company is based in San Diego, Calif. and trades on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker “CUB.” Its fiscal year 2011 annual sales were $1.28 billion.
