Dry weather puts harvest ahead of schedule

By Ben Sutherly

DAYTON — Dry weather has put farmers far ahead of schedule in harvesting their crops this fall.

As of Sunday, 77 percent of the region’s corn harvest was complete, compared to just 16 percent during the much wetter harvest of 2009, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Agricultural Statistics Service. For 2005 through 2009, an average of 36 percent of the crop had been harvested by this point in the season.

The soybean harvest is nearly complete, with 89 percent of the crop harvested, up from 69 percent last year and the five-year average of 76 percent.
