WRIGHT-PATTERSON AIR FORCE BASE — The Air Force has hired a state-supported technology organization, under a $4.25 million contract, to direct a project intended to improve manufacturing of parts for the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter.

The Air Force Research Laboratory awarded the two-year contract to TechSolve, one of Ohio’s seven Edison Technology Centers.

The project’s goal is to develop advanced machine-tool technology that would allow inspection of parts during the manufacturing process while they are being shaped by machinery, said Gary Conley, president of TechSolve.

If the part is not being made according to specifications, a computer would be able to make production changes to correct the problem.

The technology is intended to build on advanced processes some manufacturers already use. It would be useable for both composite and metal parts, Conley said.

Aerospace industry contractors General Electric Co., Rolls-Royce and Northrop Grumman Corp. are to work with TechSolve on the project.

TechSolve is based in Cincinnati and has a Dayton office. It was founded in 1982 to help manufacturers improve efficiency to compete in the global market.

The Defense Department is counting on the F-35, a stealth fighter, to modernize the attack fleets of the Air Force, Navy and Marine Corps, as well as the air forces of U.S. allies.
