Gay-themed gift shop closing store, staying on Web

Staff Report

DAYTON — Q Gift Shop, 1904 N. Main St., will close its retail location by mid-January and shift its focus entirely to an Internet and mail-order business operating out of a storage condominium, owner Jim McCarthy said in a news release.

McCarthy cited a decline in foot traffic and the poor economy as reasons for closing the store, but said its eight-year-old Web business — operated through qgiftsonline.com and sadieshouse.com — remains strong.

The gift shop, which opened in a downtown gay bar in 1993 as a specialty gift shop geared toward the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender community, moved to its current location in the Santa Clara Arts District in 1997. The company sells jewelry, candles, incense, unusual greeting cards, gift items, and lesbian and gay merchandise “without any apologies,” the news release states.

McCarthy is considering offering discounted shipping for Miami Valley customers so they’ll feel comfortable ordering online from a local business and having merchandise delivered to their home.

Inventory clearance sales will begin in December.
