GE Aviation gets federal support for engine improvement R&D

Staff Report

EVENDALE — General Electric Co.’s jet engine division said it will share in a federal investment of up to $66 million to accelerate development of technologies to reduce aircraft engine noise and emissions, and improve fuel burn.

GE Aviation said it and the Federal Aviation Administration will share the investment for up to a five-year period through the Continuous Lower Energy, Emissions and Noise (CLEEN) program.

The program’s goal is to develop the technologies for flight use beginning in 2015, GE Aviation said Thursday, June 24.

GE’s main jet engine plant is in suburban Cincinnati. Its electrical power systems business is in Vandalia. In March, GE said it plans to establish a research and development center in the Dayton area for electric power systems for airplanes, ships and hybrid automobiles.
