Honda Manufacturing of Indiana said Monday it is adding a second production shift and about 1,000 more employees to its Greensburg, Ind., plant.
Also still on track for Honda: Resumption of a second shift on an assembly line at Honda’s Marysville, Ohio, plant. That shift is being resumed after ceasing in early 2008, as a result of the economic downturn, Honda spokesman Ron Lietzke said.
The additional employment in Marysville will result in about 100 new full-time workers, he noted.
Although the company hires only Indiana residents for its assembly positions, the Greensburg plant does rely on 74 suppliers in Ohio, more than Indiana (20), Michigan (28), Kentucky (18), Texas (13) and Tennessee (10.) Altogether, Honda has about 150 suppliers in Ohio, including F&P America and Stillwater Technologies in Troy, and Becker Electrical Supply in Dayton.
Honda Greensburg builds the Civic sedan and the Civic natural gas models. The second shift at the Greensburg plant began Monday, returning all seven of Honda North America auto plants to what the automaker called “normal” production levels after the March 11 earthquake and tsunami in Japan. All Ohio plants resumed full production by mid-August.
It’s good news for Honda’s Anna plant, an hour north of Dayton, which makes the engine for the Civic. Automatic transmissions for the Civic are made at the Russells Point plant.
Honda has more employees in Ohio than any other state, about 13,400, including more than 1,300 people who live in the Dayton area. Since November 2010, Honda of America has announced or embarked on some $400 million in expansions or investments in its Ohio facilities.
